Louder Than Life: America’s Loudest Concert Powers Though Inclement Weather

Louisville’s Louder than Life, run by Danny Wimmer, is one of the nation’s foremost live music festivals. I had the incredible opportunity this year to make the about 14 hour trip from New Jersey all the way to Kentucky with a small group to participate in all four days of the festival, and I’m here to bring some of the news of days one and two back home.  
 
On the forefront of everyone’s minds for day two was the unfortunate weather that shut down the entire festival for around two hours. After some initial stubbornness by fans (myself included) we ended up in a nearby shelter to wait out the passing thunder. Fans passed the time indoors by such riveting activities as: tossing around balloons, sending waves around the room, both of which were accompanied, because this was a group of metalheads, with an occasional chorus of “F-in’ Slayer!”. While many like myself were heartbroken at the loss of Loathe’s set after their first song, those in charge did a good job reworking the schedule to accommodate the delays.  
 
Not all of the surprises here in Louisville have been bad, however. Since I’m a nerd who likes to study setlists before shows, I thought I knew what to expect from all of my favorite artists, but metalcore band Currents had other ideas. I was pleasantly surprised with a favorite of mine, "The Death We Seek", during their set, which was a worthy song to lose my shirt to while crowd surfing. Additionally, I was treated to some amazing background visuals during ERRA’s set, which were not present when I had seen them at Starland only two days prior.  
 
Fans of some bands were treated with exciting news during their sets this week. After the Burial announced that their upcoming album has been mastered, with a release date fast approaching. Furthermore, metal legends Anthrax briefly discussed their new album which released the midnight after their performance on Thursday, as well as a meet and greet/signing event happening nearby. 
 
Despite the inclement weather, the first two days here at Louder than Life have been a blast. My friends and I look forward to powering through our soreness and making the most of these last two days of the Loudest festival in America.
