Injury Episode: What Nostalgia Wishes It Was

Nostalgia has become a huge part of the music industry and has become a thing many bands tend to chase after. Trying to capture an old memory or give a listener the equivalent to musical deja vu has become pretty common in the modern age, and is a trend that, in my opinion, is starting to become a bit rundown. Most bands try to play on this nostalgic feeling and use that as a main drive to enjoy the music.
Static Dress is not one of those bands. The UK post hardcore act has put out their latest record, Injury Episode, about two weeks ago as I’m writing this, and it is easily one of my personal favorite albums of the year. Most people have called this a nostalgic trip, saying it reminds them of old Underoath, Glassjaw, and more, but I entered this album with a different approach. Mainly because I wasn’t around when those bands were putting out their big genre defining albums, I was a child who could barely even read at that time. Sure I’ve listened to those bands, and I can make connections to them and Static Dress, but I don’t get a nostalgic feeling from them. Which is why I think this album is perfect in a way, because it manages to balance both new and old sounds in a seamless way.
As I said before, I believe most bands can’t pull off the whole “nostalgia vibe” thing mainly because it feels like they’re trying to capture that sound rather than just writing what they actually want to write and every song starts to sound the same after a while. This isn’t apparent on Injury Episode. You can tell Static Dress loves each sound that they’re going for on the album, and that they want to do whatever they want. They are absolutely a product of their times, which I’m assuming they grew up in the 90s/early 2000s because the music they write would fit that era perfectly.
With that being said, you can also tell they love a lot of modern music, and they fit that in seamlessly with everything. There definitely are a lot of influences on this album, but they all range in time periods and sounds. I read in an interview that their guitarist was listening to a lot of Clairo and tried to incorporate some of that into the music! Overall, what I think all of this proves is that while they definitely have a lot of older influences, they also balance that out with a lot of modern influences that help make it appealing to all.
This segues into the fact that every song on this album sounds different, and none can be mixed up with each other. The best example I have is the 5-song stretch from lip critic to adult diamond. You start off with this fast, tight song in the form of lip critic that sounds like it could be straight out of “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge” to the maniac energy of male bomb. This leads into the shoegazey atmospheric, dull blade disguise, that then leads into the aggressive nature of Classic.Death.Pose. This finally ends off with a hard cut into the gentle and melancholic, adult diamond. This album sounds different, and before you get comfortable with one sound, the band cuts into another song that really shows that they’re a jack of all trades.
I believe that this album is going to be what “I Let It In…” was to Loathe. It’s going to be an album that overtime people gradually get increasingly into until the band explodes and reaches new heights. This album is a master class of what it means to mix both the old and the new into a way that doesn’t sound tacky or like they’re trying to chase a trend. Listening to the album you can tell it’s 4 best friends sitting in a room writing music that they absolutely love. To sum everything up, “Injury Episode” by Static Dress is not only one of my favorite albums of the year, but also one of the most impactful and creative pieces of work that’s come out in a while.
