STORRS, C.T. - Seton Hall women’s soccer (4-1-5) settled for a 0-0 draw against the UConn Huskies (3-2-6) Wednesday night, despite being heavily outshot throughout the match.
The Huskies controlled possession for most of the opening half, spending stretches on the Pirates side and creating several chances. UConn would consistently move the ball into the attacking third, testing the Pirates defense though Seton Hall’s defense stood up, preventing those chances from being converted.
The Pirates were forced into an early substitution when Nina Davis left the match due to injury and was replaced by Lydia Prioia. Seton Hall’s defense remained organized despite the change.
Seton Hall created opportunities of their own with quick breaks and taking advantage of UConn giveaways. The Huskies continued to threaten, but Seton Hall’s defense dealt with these challenges. One of UConn’s best chances came after a punched ball from Pirates goalkeeper Katherine Kleinsmith fell short. The play briefly put Seton Hall under significant pressure, but the Pirates were able to clear out the danger to keep the match scoreless.
UConn finished the first half with a 10 to 1 advantage in shots as well as controlling a majority of the possession while Seton Hall remained sturdy in its defense. Both sides entered halftime still level at 0-0.
The Pirates continued to play defensively after the half as UConn increased pressure around the Seton Hall box. Like shots, UConn dominated corner kicks and the Pirates earned their first of the match in the 60th minute.
UConn pushed for a winning goal with several opportunities going over the bar or wide. The Huskies appeared to have a potential opportunity for a penalty in the 76th minute, but the play was reviewed and ultimately no penalty was awarded.
Macie Mietz was shown a yellow card towards the end of the match. This was the only card of the match as UConn led with 11 fouls to 9.
The match ended after 90 minutes, at 0-0.
Despite being outshot 28 to 2, Seton Hall’s defense held. The Pirates made several key defensive plays to keep a clean sheet and secure the draw even as UConn pushed for a winner in the final minutes. The result also extended the wait to the next Pirates goal, with the latest coming in their September 3 match against Saint Peters.
The Pirates will return to action as they take on the Providence Friars in their next match at home on October 17.
