The Seton Hall Pirates (8-9, 0-6) fell to the UConn Huskies (8-11, 1-5) on Saturday night, 3 sets to 1.
The Pirates came into the day on a six-match losing streak and were just swept by Providence on Friday. UConn also came into the match seeking their first BIG EAST victory, having lost 3-1 to St. John’s on Friday.
The first set was tightly contested, with each team scoring points in bunches. The Pirates’ largest lead was 4, at 19-15, and they looked to put the Huskies away to take the set. However, multiple service and attack errors ruined their momentum, as UConn scored six straight points down 22-19, winning the set on a kill by Sydney Borrowy.
The Pirates came out hot in the second set, winning the first four points. Just like in the first set, UConn responded to keep it close throughout. With the score at 10-9, the Pirates started to stretch their lead, building a 19-13 margin after a kill by Alondra Villanueva.
Both teams traded runs of multiple kills, but a Madison Loiselle kill sealed a 25-19 set win for the Pirates, evening the match at 1 set apiece.
The third set was perhaps the closest of the match, with neither team leading by more than three points at any time during the set. Both teams went back and forth throughout, and it looked like the Pirates would take a 2-1 set lead in the match after a service error by UConn’s Helena Einarsdottir gave Seton Hall a 24-21 lead.
However, just like the first set, the Huskies were able to mount a comeback aided by three straight attack errors by the Pirates. Tied at 24, the Huskies won the next two points off back-to-back kills by Jordyn Hughes to put UConn on the brink of their first conference victory.
After crumbling at the end of the third set, the Pirates may have felt demoralized going into the fourth set, because it was controlled by UConn from start to finish. The Huskies quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never led by less than three points after that point.
The Pirates couldn’t gain any momentum, as they only won consecutive points one time in the fourth set. Hailey Maes’ kill on match point gave UConn the 25-14 win in the set, and the 3-1 match victory.
The Pirates are still looking to get in the BIG EAST win column, and they’ll get another chance at home on Friday against DePaul, who currently sits second place in the BIG EAST standings. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm at Walsh Gymnasium with Jeremy Son and Sean Casey on the call on wsou.net.
