WASHINGTON – The Pirates fell flat against the Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday afternoon, 5-0. Seton Hall are winless in their first two conference games of the season, and they sport an overall record of 3-6-2. They have now failed to secure a victory in their last four matches. With the convincing victory, the Hoyas improve to 6-1-3 on the season.
From the outset, Seton Hall struggled to generate a consistent offense against a well-organized Georgetown defense. The Pirates' first real opportunity came at the 13:51 mark when Kailey McCormick fired a shot from the bottom center of the box, but Georgetown goalkeeper Cara Martin was up to the task, making a comfortable save.
Meanwhile, Georgetown mounted a series of dangerous attacks early in the first half. The Hoyas' Natalie Means had a shot go wide at the 3:26 mark, while Henley Tippins rattled the woodwork with a powerful strike at 22:48, a warning of what was to come.
Seton Hall’s defense held firm for much of the first half, but Georgetown finally broke through in the 40th minute. Tippins found the back of the net, scoring off an assist from Esme Brayshaw to put the Hoyas ahead 1-0. Just three minutes later, Eliza Turner doubled Georgetown’s lead, slotting home a goal to give the Hoyas a 2-0 advantage going into halftime.
The Pirates tried to regroup at the break, but the second half quickly turned into a continuation of Georgetown’s dominance. Seton Hall goalkeeper Anna Prawer was called into action early, making a save on a bottom-right shot by Tippins just three minutes after the restart.
However, Georgetown's relentless pressure eventually wore the Pirates down. Mary Cochran netted Georgetown’s third goal in the 52nd minute, assisted by Means. The Hoyas' relentless pace continued, and just a few minutes later, Tippins scored her second of the game, assisted by Maja Lardner, to make it 4-0.
Despite the mounting scoreline, Prawer continued to make critical saves to prevent further damage, including a bottom-center shot from Lizzie Heller at the 71:30 mark and several other attempts. However, the Pirates’ defense could not contain Georgetown’s depth. In the 80th minute, Jocelyn Lohmeyer capped the scoring with a fifth goal, putting the game out of reach for Seton Hall.
Offensively, the Pirates struggled to create meaningful chances. McCormick’s first-half effort remained their best opportunity until Chiara Pucci managed a shot in the 83rd minute, but it was saved by Georgetown’s substitute goalkeeper Alexa Hadley. In the end, Seton Hall managed just a few shots on target, and their inability to finish left them with a scoreless afternoon.
The Pirates now face an uphill battle as they continue Big East play. The loss marks their second consecutive conference defeat, leaving them still searching for their first win in league play. Seton Hall will look to turn things around when they travel to face St. John’s on Sunday. The match is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Belson Stadium in Queens.
