Chiara Pucci’s lone goal gave the Pirates all three points as they picked up their first conference win of the season on Sunday. It was a back-and-forth contest between the two sides, but ultimately it was the Pirates that came out on top 1-0.
The Pirates were certainly the better of the two sides in the opening 45 minutes, as Providence were very nervous playing out of the back and had limited opportunities going forward. The visitors failed to connect their passes in the final third and were very dormant in the first half.
The Hall had multiple chances to put the ball into the back of the net, but it wasn’t until late in the first half that they found their goal. On a misplaced cross from Chiara Pucci, the ball ended up bouncing right in front of the Providence goalkeeper who misread the situation and ended up picking the ball out of the back of her net. Pucci’s ball went up and over the keeper, as the Pirates took the lead. The goal marks Pucci’s third goal of her career, all of which have come this season.
Starting the second half already a goal up, Seton Hall wasn’t as aggressive but still able to create some opportunities. Olivia Beauvois and Natalie Tavana were at the center of Seton Hall’s offense creating the best opportunities, but ultimately couldn’t add to their tally.
As the game went on Seton Hall continued to sit deeper and deeper, absorbing the pressure Providence applied. The Friars had multiple opportunities in front of the goal but couldn’t capitalize, as Avery Strohecker was forced into multiple saves. Strohecker was arguably the reason why Seton Hall came away with the win, as she was forced into seven saves in the 45 minutes of action she played.
Seton Hall moves up to a 4-6-3 record on the season, with a 1-1-2 record in Big East play, and currently sits with five points in the conference standings. Providence falls to 2-2 in Big East play sitting on six points. The Pirates will take on the Xavier Musketeers in Ohio on October 13th while the Friars will visit Creighton in their next contest.
The victory gives the Pirates much-needed momentum as they continue their conference slate, and team performances like today will take this team a long way.
