SOUTH ORANGE, N.J - After dominating Wagner 84-40 in their season opener on Thursday, Seton Hall (1-0) looks to build on their great start when they take on Fordham (1-1) on Tuesday in Walsh Gymnasium.
The Pirates showed few weaknesses throughout their first game of the season. It was the graduate students that led the way for the Pirates against Wagner; Maryland transfer Faith Masonius finished with a career-high 23 points on 11-17 shooting in her Seton Hall debut, Amari Wright added nine points and 10 assists, and Yaya Lops produced 15 points.
All 10 Pirates scored on Thursday night, including Sydnee Eggleton, the now-sophomore who spent her entire freshman campaign rehabbing from injury. Eggleton knocked in a corner three pointer in the final minutes right next to the Pirate bench, and was immediately mobbed with cheers and hugs by her teammates.
Looking at Fordham, the Rams have struggled to start the year. After being picked to finish ninth in the A10 preseason poll, Fordham started out the year losing a buy game to Adelphi University, a division two school. With the score being 50-50, Adelphi scored the final eight points of the game in the closing minutes to stun the Rams at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
However, the Rams did get back on track on Friday, where they took down a talented Cal State Fullerton squad at home 66-51. The defense in particular was outstanding for Fordham, as they forced 19 turnovers against the Titans. Overall, Fordham has forced 13 steals in each of their first two games.
One player to watch for the Rams is the English six-foot-two freshman forward Precious Omosola. In just 16 minutes on the court against Cal State Fullerton, Omosola has picked up 13 points and four steals for her squad. Look for the freshman to have an expanded role for Fordham on Tuesday.
After missing the Wagner game due to illness, Seton Hall head coach Tony Bozzella is expected to be back on the sidelines for the Pirates. Bozzella is starting his 12th year at the helm of his alma mater, and is extremely confident in this year’s Pirates squad, especially the transfer additions of Masonius, Messiah Hunter, and Kaydan Lawson from the portal.
Regarding the matchup history between Seton Hall and Fordham, Seton Hall is 8-5 all-time against the Rams, with the last matchup in the 2022-2023 season ending in a 78-73 win for the Pirates in the Bronx. None of the matchups have been particularly close either, with the closest margin of victory being only 11 points in 12 total matchups between the schools.
Pat Corsello and Kyle Ferreira will have the call for WSOU at 7:00 p.m, with pregame coverage starting at 6:45.
