Spain Wins World Cup in Defensive Masterclass

NY/NJ METLIFE STADIUM - A defensive showdown took place to bring home the World Cup Trophy between Spain and Argentina. Despite Argentina’s best efforts, Spain came out on top with a 1-0 victory in extra time. After 120 plus minutes and a new saved goal record by Argentina Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez (11) it just wasn’t enough to stave off the barrage Spain had in store. 

 

The matchup was full of yellow cards and one red card as well, making it a scrappy game, especially for Argentina who were shown all of the cards. It began in the 41st minute with Lisandro Martínez being the first of many for a late tackle. Next was Marc Cucurella in the 57th minute for pulling on Giuliano Simeone to stop Spain’s counterattack. After that was Enzo Fernández who received two yellows and was ejected from the game. The first yellow card was shown to him in the 62nd minute for dissenting a call made by the referee, and his second in the 92nd minute for a challenge on Pau Cubarsí which resulted in him being ejected. Just two minutes later Cristian Romero had gotten a yellow card for challenging the referee about Fernández’s call. 

 

The icing goal of the contest took place in the 106th minute from Ferran Torres on a volley that got passed the Argentina goalkeeper. Following this the game was just playing keep away and more stellar defense amongst Argentina’s attempts to score via corner kicks and a couple of free kicks. 

 

As the clock ticked down to zero, Lionel Messi took a final look at the World Cup pitch as the Spain national team stormed the field to celebrate, despite not winning his second World Cup or second in a row, he will still go down as one of the greatest footballers of all time. Lamine Yamal continues to grow his legacy with his first World Cup victory at only 19 years old, a feat not accomplished by many. The Golden Boot winner has been announced, the winner being Kylian Mbappe after being the tournaments top scorer with 10 goals, being the first player in men’s history to win it in back to back tournaments with the Ballon d’Or not being announced yet.
