Spain vs. Uruguay Recap

One of the final matches of the Group Stage of the World Cup saw Spain and Uruguay meeting up in Guadalajara Stadium. Spain walked away with the victory 1-0, mercifully allowing Spain to bypass a Round 32 meetup with Argentina. The game left Uruguay 3rd in the group and the highest ranked team to be eliminated before the Knockout Round. It was also their earliest World Cup elimination.
The game started off with an incredibly physical first half. Uruguay spent most of their defensive energy focused on preventing Spain’s rising star, Lamine Yamal. Spain’s defense was as strong as ever, preventing many scoring opportunities. Despite Uruguay’s defensive strategy often leading to gaps in the defense, they held strong for a while in the first half, also preventing many scoring opportunities for Spain.
Despite stellar defense from Uruguay, they couldn’t hold out against the powerhouse of Spain’s offense for long. A cross from Marcos Llorente to Álex Baena, allowed Baena to put a pretty weak kick towards the goal. Despite it being a less than superb kick, the Uruguayan goalie, Fernando Muslera misjudged the trajectory of the ball and allowed it to slip through his hands and bounce across the line, giving Spain the 1-0 lead. This mistake from Muslera seemed to dishearten the Uruguayan team, only compounded by midfielder Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury that ended with him stretchered off the field.
In the second half, Uruguay tried switching up the players on the field to try and counter Spain’s offense and score some goals themselves. After making his goal mistake, Muslera requested to come off at halftime and was replaced by Sergio Rochet. As time went on, the game got more and more physical. Uruguay made 3 more attempts on goal, but they were all denied by Unai Simón. Spain also made another attempt at a goal but Ferran Torres watched his shot bounce off of the crossbar.
Frustrations continued to escalate working into stoppage time. The aggressive style of the game finally came to a head when Uruguay’s Agustín Canobbio was given a red card for an aggressive slide tackle, followed by aggressive behavior towards Spanish players and the referee.
The game came to a conclusion with Spain taking the first place spot in the Group H standings with 7 points. The incredibly tense and physical game ended with 1 yellow card for Spain, 3 for Uruguay, and the red card for Uruguay. The game sent Uruguay home on the tails on one of their worst world cup performances ever. Spain will go on to play Austria in Inglewood, CA on July 2nd.
