The Seton Hall Women’s Soccer team found themselves in a defensive battle on Sunday, as they traveled to Teaneck, New Jersey to face the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University. After a tough battle back and forth, both teams settled for a point in a 0-0 draw.
Heading into this matchup, the Pirates were coming off a 2-1 victory last Friday night over Marist University. But they knew the Knights would pose a tough challenge; FDU is projected to finish second in the NEC, according to the coaches' preseason poll. Sure enough, the Knights' defense came ready to play, as they defended six corners while also saving five shots. Even though they did not fully prevail, FDU’s offense held more possession and more total shots than The Hall had. This match didn’t come without a physical toll, as six yellow cards were handed out. Still, the Knights could never put the finishing touches on shots and put the ball in the back of the net. The Knights look to bounce back offensively when they face Stony Brook on Thursday.
Despite the FDU offense, the Pirates’ defense was what kept them from leaving Teaneck with a loss. Senior GK Anna Prawer made some impressive saves in the first half to keep the energy and engagement of the backline high. But confidence came from plays on offense for the Pirates just as well, as the score doesn’t represent the number of scoring opportunities they repeatedly set up for themselves. The Hall took eight shots with five on frame, while FDU took nine shots with only three on frame. Leaders of their team, specifically Natalie Tavana and Adria Kitzinger, kept the Pirates sharp, despite the ball not finding the back of the net.
The Pirates look to turn the offense up and get back in the win column, as they return home on Thursday to host Lehigh University at 7 PM.
