SOUTH ORANGE, N.J - The Seton Hall Pirates take on the Wagner Seahawks tomorrow at Walsh Gymnasium to kick off their 2024-25 season. It’s the first time the two teams have met since Dec. 21, 2021.
Although it is the season opener, it won’t be the first time we’ll see what this season’s Pirate squad will look like. On Nov. 2, Seton Hall took care of business in an exhibition against Jefferson University, winning 87-61.
We got a good glimpse of how this team is going to run and make no mistake – this is Savannah Catalon’s team until further notice. The Preseason All Big-East Honorable Mention was everything as advertised, leading all scorers with 22 points on great shooting splits. She also knocked down five three-pointers, tied for most in the game.
Two big-time transfers also showed out in their Seton Hall debuts: Faith Masonius and Nicole Melious. Masonius already looks comfortable in the starting lineup, putting up an efficient 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with six assists and four rebounds.
Melious was a big sophomore transfer from La Salle, who is going to play a huge role in helping improve Seton Hall’s outside shooting. She took all 11 of her shots from beyond the arc, knocking down five. She finished second in the game with 15 points and four rebounds.
Yaya Lops is stepping into a larger role in the frontcourt this year, after departures of Azana Baines, A’Jah Davis, and Kae Satterfield. Getting the start against Jefferson, the grad student put up 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Seton Hall has a lot of young talent, but they still need their veteran players to step up on the court.
Amari Wright is the longest tenured Pirate on the roster, and she looked like her usual self, dropping dimes and picking pockets all night long. Her seven assists and two steals led all Pirates.
The Wagner Seahawks come into this game off of a rough 2023-24 season, where they finished 7-21. They are returning their leading scorer, grad student Taleah Washington, who also led the Seahawks in rebounds, assists, and steals. She’s going to be the primary option for Wagner, but Seton Hall has a treasure trove of excellent defenders to throw at her.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 p.m. on 89.5 FM WSOU. Spencer Gonzales and Chris Jones will be on the call.
