SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (9-10, 1-3) took down the UConn Huskies (7-17, 2-2) by a score of 5-4 off of a walk off home run from Katey Brennan.

In the first inning, right hander Karrissa Dupuis found early success pitching into three groundouts to third baseman Christina Ginex.

The bats were not as hot to start for Seton Hall and after a leadoff walk from Benitez, two pop ups and a strike out would end the inning leaving it scoreless. Dupuis continued her hot start in the top of the second with a leadoff strikeout, a sliding catch from left fielder Katey Brennan, and a strikeout to end the top half of the inning.

Erin Howard would lead off with a standup double off the left field wall. A hard hit from Loreale Blake ended in a pop out to center and after a strikeout, Andrea Perez drew a walk to give the Pirates runners on first and second and a walk from Kosinski would load the bases for Benitez.

Benitez would rip a line drive right back up the middle into the face of the pitcher Caprice Bohmer. Two would score and Bohmer would have to leave the game. The reliever Amber Bretton would clean up the last out of the game with a groundout to herself.

The Huskies continued to apply pressure through the middle innings, finally scoring in the fifth after a double and an infield hit cut the lead to 2–1. Seton Hall answered in the bottom half when Kosinski singled, and Brennan later walked to load the bases. Naya Martinez brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, extending the Pirates’ lead to 3–1 heading into the sixth inning.

Right-hander Kyra Kreucher would come in as relief for Dupuis. Kreucher retired the Huskies in order, and the Pirates would also go down in order. Going into the top of the seventh inning, Seton Hall held a slim 3-1 lead.

The Huskies would start the seventh with a leadoff single and then an error at second base would have runners at 1st and second. Then a double would score the lead runner with runners at second and third with no outs.

A blooper to shallow right would score another to tie the game at three with runners on the corners and still no outs. The trail runner would steal second on a late steal before another error at second base would allow another to score, but the Huskies got caught trying to send their trail runner home who was beaten by the throw.

UConn then had their first lead of the game at 4-3. Dupuis would come back into the game to close it out, and despite loading the bases, she was able to get out of the inning. It all came down to the bottom of the seventh for the Pirates.

Kosinski popped out to the catcher to lead things off. Then Benitez came up to the plate and knocked a hard ground ball right through the legs of the third baseman to get a double. Katey Brennan then sealed the game with a rocket home run to walk off Seton Hall’s first BIG EAST win.

Looking ahead, the Pirates have two more matchups against UConn at home for the weekend series. Their next game starts Saturday at 12:00 P.M. followed by their final matchup Sunday at noon as well.
