SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (15-10) swept the Rider Broncs (6-17) in a midweek doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, with scores of 7-4 and 4-2.

Following a great outing at Stony Brook on Tuesday, the Pirates returned to their home field Wednesday and showcased two great performances.

Game one saw the Pirates get off to a blazing start with four runs accumulated in the first inning. Following a double by Taylor Hill, Kelsey Carr blasted a two-run double to bring home Katey Brennan and Hill to start the game 2-0. Later in the inning, Amber Johnson earned an RBI-single, bringing Caroline Hobbes home to make it 4-0.

The offensive output would continue later in the third inning where the Pirates added three runs to the scoreboard. Freshman Naya Martinez knocked in her first career RBI with a single to send Hobbes home to extend their lead to 5-3. Another two runs came through with two outs in the third following a Brennan single.

While the Pirates would not cross home plate the rest of the game, their pitching came through big the rest of their outing. Karissa Dupuis started for the Pirates, but after giving up three runs and four hits through three innings, Kyra Kreuscher replaced her.

From the fourth inning onward, Kreuscher was solid in the circle for Seton Hall. The junior pitcher allowed only one run, two hits, and no walks in her relief appearance. While the one run from Rider occurred in the top of the seventh inning, it didn’t affect the Pirates at all.

Game one concluded with the Pirates earning a 7-4 victory. Game two would end up being a similar result for them.

Freshman Rachael Schumann earned the start for the Pirates. In her four innings pitched in game two, Schumann allowed six hits, one run, and was unable to strike out an opposing Rider batter.

Offensively, Carr was once again productive for the Pirates as she launched her ninth home run this season in the bottom of the first. However, from there, the Pirates struggled to generate anything at bat until the fourth inning. Once that inning arrived, the Pirates got back on track.

After Carr flew out for the first out, Hannah Alexander singled and Olivia Gilbert doubled to get on base. Hobbes would then be hit by a pitch to make the bases loaded with one out. On a 2-2 count, Martinez reached base on an error, allowing pinch runner Jessica Muniz to score and make it 2-1 Pirates.

To start the fifth, Carr came in for Schumann in the circle and started dealing immediately. Against all three batters she faced, she struck out all three. In the bottom half of the same inning, Carr smacked a two-run homer to extend their lead to 4-1.

Carr would end game two throwing five strikeouts in the circle.

Similarly to game one, a late-game run scored by Rider in the sixth was not enough, and the Pirates completed the sweep.

The Pirates will head up to Storrs, Connecticut this weekend to face the UConn Huskies in a huge BIG EAST series clash.
