SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (8-10) swept the Wagner Seahawks (2-10) in both games of the doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Pirates delivered a fantastic all-around performance to defeat Wagner 6–2, using timely hitting and dominant pitching to secure the win.
Seton Hall broke the game open with a balanced offensive attack that produced 11 total hits, highlighted by a three-run fifth inning. After a scoreless first two frames, the Pirates began to find rhythm at the plate in the third and fourth innings before the fifth inning surge created separation.
Extra-base hits played a major role in the victory, as several Pirates drove the ball into the gaps to keep pressure on the Wagner defense with many doubles.
Leading the offensive charge was Sophia DeMarco, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Lea Kosinski added another big performance at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Katey Brennan also contributed with two hits, including a double, helping keep the lineup in a strong rhythm throughout the game.
Additional RBIs from Erin Howard and Gabby Mercado, both of whom recorded doubles, helped extend the Pirates’ lead and showcase the depth of the potent Pirates’ lineup.
On the mound, Karissa Dupuis delivered a solid outing for Seton Hall, earning her first win of the new year after five innings of work, allowing just one hit to Wagner's Ava Nawrocki who collected an RBI double. Dupuis struck out three batters during her strong outing. The bullpen held strong down the stretch, with Kyra Kreuscher closing the door to record the save and secure the Pirates’ victory.
In game two, the Pirates followed up their initial victory with a 6-0 shutout performance behind stellar pitching.
Seton Hall controlled the game from the middle innings on, breaking through in the third inning with two runs before putting the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning. The Pirates finished with 10 hits while limiting Wagner to just two hits, showcasing another dominant pitching performance.
On the mound, Rachael Schumann delivered a standout performance for Seton Hall. The right-hander earned the win after five shutout innings, allowing only one hit while striking out four and issuing two walks. Her efficient outing kept Wagner’s offense off balance and set the tone early for the Pirates.
Offensively, Seton Hall’s lineup continued to apply pressure throughout the game. Christina Ginex led the charge, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Kosinski also contributed another strong performance at the plate with two hits. Andrea Perez and Elisabeth Figliolin each added hits as well, helping sustain rallies and keep the Pirates offense moving.
Following the sweep of the doubleheader, the Pirates now turn their attention to a weekend series with UConn, beginning on Friday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
