QUEENS, N.Y. - The Seton Hall Pirates (7-2-6) took down the St. John’s Red Storm (7-5-3) by a score of 1-0 on Saturday night. Mikkel Lejbowicz scored the lone goal and game-winner at the 31-minute mark of the first half, extending the Pirates undefeated streak to seven games.
The first 30 minutes of play lacked much activity, as each team only tallied one shot apiece, with Lejbowicz’s shot being the first to be on net just after the 26-minute mark. Included in this early defensive stalemate was a handful of fouls and one yellow card awarded to Guilherme Gomes for persistent infringement.
Following this slow 30 minutes of action, Lejbowicz changed the entire course of this match when he fired one of his right foot and into the top right corner of the net, past St. John’s goalkeeper Alec McLachlan. The goal came at the 31:11 mark, with the assists on the Seton Hall goal credited to Agustin Resch and Axel Berglund.
The remaining 14 minutes of the first half featured the same number of shots as the previous 30, and at the break, the Pirates held a one goal lead.
Action began to pick up in the second frame, with St. John’s putting two shots on goal in the opening minutes, coming from Gabin Thomelier and Guilherme Gomes.
Seton Hall’s defense continued to stay strong, as despite the numerous shots in the second half, St. John’s could not find an opening. On the offensive side, the Pirates also continued to put forth a respectable effort, as all five of their shots on goal in the contest were on net.
Two more yellow cards were earned, with Seton Hall’s Til Kauschke taking one at the 66-minute mark, and St. John’s Ivar Na Aga being credited for one of his own eight minutes later.
With the clock starting to become a factor, the Red Storm rattled off three last shots, but failed to put any on net. St. John’s failure to put shots on goal was a big story of this game, as while they finished with 11 shots, only one was on net.
Seton Hall goalkeeper Matias Molina turned in his eighth clean sheet of the year, as despite only being challenged by one shot on goal, he delivered another solid performance.
Following their seventh win of the season, the Pirates remain undefeated in BIG EAST play and will look to continue that when they finish off their road trip in Omaha against Creighton on Saturday, November 1st. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
