SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (8-8) blew out the Wagner Seahawks (4-13) 14-1, behind strong hitting throughout the lineup on Tuesday evening at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium.
After clinching the series against Brown in their last contest, the Pirates looked to pick up right where they left off against a struggling Wagner team.
Two freshmen were given the starting nods for their respective teams. For the Pirates, the Waldwick, New Jersey native Jason Kuhn started. Entering the game, he had an 11.81 ERA, and this marked his first start of the season. For the Seahawks, the North Carolina native Quinn Finnegan took the mound for his second career start. He came in 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA.
The first inning started well for the Pirates, as despite a leadoff walk to open the game, Kuhn and company kept the score sheet clean. In the bottom of the first, the Pirates jumped out to an early lead. A couple of walks set up Ryan Frontera, who singled to left field, and gave Seton Hall a 2-0 lead. However, the Pirates were not done as a Frankie Scrivanic single brought home Aidan Sengenberger to make it 3-0 by the end of the inning.
From there, things only got worse for the Seahawks. After a pitching change to Sam Bonilla, the lead continued to grow. Gabe Cavazzoni and Sengenberger each doubled, combining to drive in five runs in the third inning to push the score to 8-0.
The Pirates hot hitting continued in the fourth and fifth innings, as they scored five runs to extend the lead to 13-0.
Wagner finally got on the board in the sixth inning, on an Emmett Coco groundout that brought in Lukas Torres making the score 13-1. Seton Hall answered with one more run to make it 14-1 and that is how the contest would finish, with the game ending in the seventh inning due to the mercy rule.
The Pirates now turn their attention to Hofstra on Friday, which will be the first of three at the Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium. Tune into WSOU.net, where Jacob Glick and Thomas Baldacchino will be on the call for this one, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
