Washington, D.C. - Seton Hall men’s soccer (3-3-6) struggled on the road in D.C. against the Georgetown Hoyas (11-1-1), falling 4-0 to the third-ranked team in the nation. The Hoyas scored three times in the first half and added another shortly after the second half began.
The match was moved up two hours due to weather concerns, but the Pirates came out early and established control of possession in the opening minutes. Despite this, Seton Hall struggled to turn that possession into dangerous opportunities in the opposing box.
Georgetown broke through in the 12th minute when Terrance Reynolds capitalized on a rebound following a collision between Seton Hall goalkeeper Devin Armstrong and Hoyas forward Mitchell Baker. The goal was reviewed for a foul on Georgetown but was upheld, giving them a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates continued to keep possession following the goal, but this didn’t result in pressure being put on the Georgetown defense. The Hoyas doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Eric Howard found the back of the net after a corner kick. Helped by a deflection in the box, Georgetown took a commanding 2-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Georgetown scored their third goal. Following a struggle for possession in the box, Howard set up Matthew Van Horn with a backheel pass, and it was then finished to extend the lead to 3-0. After only a few minutes, the Pirates found themselves in a much deeper hole just before they headed into the halftime break.
Seton Hall entered the break trailing 3-0 needing a quick response, however it was Georgetown who scored quickly after the restart. A poor turnover by the Pirates in front of their own box gave Georgetown another opportunity, and Casey Milliken converted to make it 4-0 shortly after halftime.
Georgetown continued to control the game throughout the second half, preventing a Pirates comeback. Seton Hall struggled to find a way to unlock the Georgetown defense and pose serious threats on goal while the Hoyas comfortably defended their four-goal lead.
Pirates’ midfielder Giacomo Mana received a yellow card in the second half.
Seton Hall was unable to find a goal before the final whistle. The 4-0 defeat continues a tough stretch for the Pirates offense. They have scored just one goal in the last five matches.
With the loss, the Pirates will look to regroup as they return home to Owen T. Carroll field for their next match. Seton Hall is scheduled to host Liberty on Tuesday.
