SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates men’s soccer team took on the No. 14-ranked Georgetown Hoyas at Owen T. Carroll Field where it ended in a scoreless tie that had twice as many fouls committed from both teams than shots on goal.

It was an extremely physical game from start to finish, as the match featured relentless pressing on both ends with numerous slide tackles and turnovers all over the field that kept the game action packed the entire time.

From the opening whistle, both of these teams sent a clear message that it would be all brute force going forward. Within the first ten minutes, fouls were called on Giacomo Mana, Matthew Van Horn, and Oliver Stafford, which set the tone for a night of aggressive challenges all over the field.

In the first ten minutes of the game, neither team could hold possession of the ball for more than 30 seconds as multiple turnovers were forced at midfield. Seton Hall nearly struck first in the 11th minute when Liam Guske drove a shot low to the left corner, but Georgetown’s goalkeeper Tenzing Manske made a terrific save.

Later, Zach Zengue took a shot of his own that was saved by Matias Molina, who had a spectacular showing in this game.

The climax of the first half came between the 21st and 24th minutes where Mitchell Baker fired a shot on Molina who made the save, and then moments later, Seton Hall’s Nico Rubio shot a missile heading towards the top right corner, where Manske made a diving save, just enough to tip it away and force a corner kick on the play.

The 2nd half was all Molina, as in the 50th minute, Baker’s low drive to the bottom right corner was miraculously saved. Just twenty minutes later, Diego Letayf unleashed a curving shot towards the same exact location of the goal where Molina again made a great save on the ball.

The highlight of the night came in the 77th minute where Georgetown’s Baker found space inside the box and fired a rocket towards the bottom right corner where Molina made a remarkable diving save on a high-velocity, perfectly located shot.

Georgetown threatened again with a 4‑on‑2 breakaway where Loukas Maroutsis had the chance to finally take the lead on the relentless Pirates defense, but his shot drifted wide left. As the match went on, the physicality escalated even further. Back‑to‑back fouls in the 63rd minute saw both Zengue and Joseph Min whistled on the same play.

In the 79th minute, Georgetown’s Eric Howard was called for an offensive foul near the box that ended another strong opportunity for them offensively. Til Kauschke then received another yellow card in the 81st minute.

A monumental part of this game came when Georgetown’s Baker was shown a red card in the 88th minute of the game after a late challenge, reducing the Hoyas to ten men and suspending him for next game. Just a minute later, another card was given out to the Hoyas as Zengue picked up a yellow card, where Georgetown’s frustration grew even higher.

Despite there being countless fouls and cards shown in this game, the goalkeepers and defenses made the biggest plays throughout the whole game, as four of Molina’s six saves came on plays which required him to lay out.

The Pirates are looking to build off this impressive defensive effort when they face FIU at 6:56pm at Owen T. Carroll Field this upcoming Tuesday where you can catch all the action on WSOU.net with Ryan Nelke and Nick DiBlasi on the call.
