Seton Hall Goes Up Early Only to Lose 2-1 to Penn

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Seton Hall took an early 1-0 lead on the road against Penn, but they were unable to hold on and conceded two straight goals to fall 2-1.

 

Coming off a four-game unbeaten streak, Seton Hall came into Philiadelphia with high hopes. They would quickly find themselves on their heels though as they spent the majority of the first 10 minutes with the ball in their own half. 

 

After some key defending, Seton Hall would begin coordinating their attack. They continued to mount pressure on the Penn penalty box, and a foul by Penn would give The Pirates an opportunity to set up a set piece.  

 

The Pirates would capitalize on that opportunity and after a pinball near the goal, Timothy Valentine would put the first point on the board just 20 minutes into the first half. 

 

The rest of the first half would be less eventful. Several saves from Seton Hall’s Devin Armstrong would carry the Pirates to a 1-0 lead heading into the half. 

 

Seton Hall would become more defensively focused in the second half, attempting to hang on to their 1-0 lead on the road. Multiple fouls from pirate defenders would keep heavy pressure on them right from the jump.  

 

Defender Charlie Herley would pick up a yellow card less than seven minutes into the second half. Despite the card, the Pirates continued to play aggressive defense while not attempting much offense. 

 

Eventually the relentless attacks from Penn resulted in the first Penn goal of the evening. Leading scorer for Penn, Marco Bottene, equalized for the Quakers in the 81st minute. Bottene was not finished, however, less than two minutes later he would score the game winning goal for Penn in the 83rd minute. 

 

Seton Hall would only put up one shot in the last seven minutes of the game, but it was off target. Knut Ottosson would also pick up a yellow card before heading to the bus. 

 

Seton Hall is just beginning its road trip as their next match is at UConn in Storrs, Connecticut to begin conference play on Friday the September 18th. They will then play at Princeton the following Tuesday before their next home game.
