SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday, losing in straight sets, 3-0. The Pirates fell to 8-12 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
This was a win that would have been a positive note for the Pirates, but they couldn't find a way to win. This is now the Pirates' 9th straight loss since their match versus New Haven on September 19th.
The Pirates struggled to find a smooth rhythm vs. Marquette, which caused Marquette to control the entirety of the match. The Golden Eagles won the first set 25-14, taking an early lead that put Seton Hall in a tough position heading into the second set.
Marquette continued its pressure on the Pirates and once again limited them offensively. Seton Hall managed just 17 points, as the Golden Eagles took the set 25-17 to move within one set of the match's victory.
The Pirates had to respond to the Golden Eagles and put up a competitive performance after two frustrating sets. Seton Hall stayed within distance of the Golden Eagles, scoring 22 points compared to Marquette's 25 points. However, the Golden Eagles did hold off the Pirates, closing out to get the win and the sweep.
Alondra Villanueva led Seton Hall with eight kills, while Madison Loiselle added seven. Gwen Adler recorded 19 assists, helping organize the Pirates' offense, but overall, it was not enough to match the offensive onslaught from Marquette. Seton Hall finished with 27 kills and a .159 hitting percentage compared to the Golden Eagles' 51 kills and .346 hitting percentage.
Carson Tyler led the Golden Eagles with 16 kills, while Tani Juric added another 15 kills. The Golden Eagles finished with seven service aces compared to the Pirates' three.
The Pirates will look to bounce back during their next game versus Georgetown on October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. The Hoyas are 11-7 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
