INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (6-14) fell to the Butler Bulldogs (10-12) on Friday night, getting swept in consecutive sets. Seton Hall now remains winless in conference play while Butler earned their third win.
The opening set saw the Pirates take an early lead, courtesy of blocks by Rasmussen
and Opland, but the lead quickly diminished. Both teams traded 7-1 runs in the set,
including when a kill by Asli Subasili cut The Hall's deficit to 13-9.
Ultimately, the effort was not enough as Seton Hall faced a 20-18 deficit late in
the set. Sadie Reich’s block pushed the set to 23-22, but that was as close as it
got, as the Pirates ultimately dropped the opening set 25-22.
The next set didn't fare much better as Seton Hall found themselves in a 9-2 hole.
The Pirates fought back making the set competitive after an ace by Reich cut the deficit
to 21-14. The Bulldogs regrouped to score four of the final five points and win 25-15.
The third set was back and forth for the majority of the set. The Pirates got off
to a fast start off of a kill from Reich that gave them a 5-4 lead. However this momentum
did not last long, as Butler responded with four straight points to grab the lead
for good.
Leading 11-8, Butler scored three straight points for a 14-8 lead. Rasmussen had a
kill to cut The Hall's deficit to 20-17. Then, Seton Hall dropped the last five points,
losing the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Seton Hall struggled with errors and mistakes all game long. They had a -0.057 attack
percentage in set two and a second-straight sub-zero attack percentage at -.054 in
the third set. The Pirates also struggled with errors, totaling 23.
Sadie Reich led the way with nine kills and two aces. Reich also tied for the match-high
with nine kills to go with five digs. Just a freshman, she has led the Pirate attack
throughout the season, leading the team in kills.
The Pirates fall to 7-16 all-time against the Bulldogs and have now lost 13 of the
last 15 matches in the head-to-head series. This is the Pirates third three-set loss
of the season. They will now hit the road to face the Xavier Musketeers in Cincinnati
at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 25.
