Seton Hall Erases Early Deficit to Beat Providence on the Road

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (11-5, 5-2) marched back from a halftime deficit to victory over the Providence Friars (9-8, 2-4) by a score of 58-48 on Thursday night. Jordana Cordio was the leading scorer with 17 points, and Mariana Valenzuela’s fourth quarter surge helped the Pirates to overpower the Friars.
The Pirates started the contest with sloppy ball-handling, allowing the Friars to jump to an early lead in the first quarter. However, the Pirates’ scrappy defense forced sloppy play on the Providence side as well, allowing them to outscore the Friars 40-25 in the second half. They eventually found a rhythm to come back from a double-digit deficit to earn the 10-point win.
Some things they can look to keep up with are protecting the ball, trying to cut down on the 18 turnovers from tonight, because Marquette will look to punish that type of play. Another thing to look to do is to keep Codio scorching hot like she was tonight, hopefully allowing her to blossom against the Golden Eagles.
These types of games are pivotal to their success for their BIG EAST tournament placement, now nipping at the heels of Marquette, with assuredly a lot of tension and pressure coming into their matchup with them, with this matchup being a pathway for them taking down Villanova.
Most importantly, this proves this team can overcome adversity in a tough environment. And Pirate fans know that more adversity and much tougher competition is coming for Seton Hall, having to face the Huskies once more and the Villanova Wildcats once more as well.
This was a pleasing win from The Hall, looking to continue the heat into the coming matchups, especially with the Huskies in the coming weeks.
The Pirates will now return home to face the Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday, January 14 at 7:00 P.M. where Ryan Nelke and Chris Heite will have the call on 89.5 FM WSOU.
