SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (9-9) dropped the middle game of their three-game set with the Hofstra Pride (6-11) on Saturday, 16-8. This is only the Pirates' second loss in their last seven games.
For Jayden Barroqueiro, success has been hard to come by so far this season. The southpaw transfer from James Madison brought a 9.37 ERA into the day, and his latest performance on did not help. Hofstra second baseman Tyler Castrataro started the scoring with a two-RBI double, before catcher Nick Biddle would bring in an additional third run to close a statement first inning from the Pride.
The Pirates quickly responded, as in the bottom of the second, a Frankie Scrivanic double introduced the scoring, followed by a sacrifice fly from Aiden Dill to bring Scrivanic home. The equalizer came on a two-out Gabe Cavazzoni single, bringing home Magnus Krieger.
Both Barroqueiro and Hofstra starter Chris Bedford began to settle in after the second inning. Barroqueiro had four strikeouts to Bedford’s two, however, Bedford’s pitch count was much more manageable to this point.
Hofstra took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out double to left center from Tyler Cox. Cox later came around to score himself, on an errant attempt to catch CJ Griggs stealing second. Ty Acker would get one back for the Pirates in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly, scoring Cavazzoni.
Pirates relievers Christopher Ho and Connor Byrne did not help stop the bleeding. The Pride put up a four-run top of the sixth capped off by a Griggs two-run single, putting Hofstra up 9-4. The Pride were not done there.
A couple of bases-loaded walks as well as multi-RBI base knocks for Castrataro and right fielder Nick Gallelo blew the game open for Hofstra, 16-4. The Pirates were on the brink of losing via the run rule, but toughened out three runs to extend the game. The game played out a full nine innings, but the deficit was too much for Seton Hall, and the Pride won it by a final score of 16-8.
Hofstra reliever Tanner Sanderoff got credited with the win, while Jayden Barroqueiro falls to 0-4 on the season with the loss. Griggs continued his phenomenal season for Hofstra, going 3-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. For the Pirates, Scrivanic had a solid day, going 2-4 with three RBI’s himself.
The Pirates look to take the rubber game against Hofstra tomorrow with first pitch slated for noon. Tune into WSOU.net for all coverage, where Chris Heite and Maggie Fournier will be on the call.
