The Seton Hall Pirates (1-1-1) came up short on Saturday night against Saint Louis (2-0-1) with a 1-0 loss, their first of the season. In their first ever matchup, the Billikens posted a strong outing against the Pirates, having control of the offense for the vast majority of the game.
From the get-go, Saint Louis came out on fire, taking three shots in the first twenty minutes. In the wake of the 22nd minute, Saint Louis defender Grady Eaton neutralized Seton Hall's defense, and potted the only goal of the night following a corner kick just less than a minute prior, with assists from midfielders Carlos Leatherman and Brayden Sellers, giving St. Louis a 1-0 lead.
With Saint Louis ahead, Seton Hall knew changes needed to be made. With subs coming in, the Pirates started to gain some more footing defensively and played a much more physical game, with the team picking up five fouls after the Saint Louis goal to end the first half.
Coming into the second half of the game, it seemed as if the Pirates were going to tie this up, as momentum was now in their favor. However, with fouls being handed out left and right to both teams, this aggressive style of play Seton Hall was playing had caught up to them when defender Konstantin Donalies slide tackled a Saint Louis player on a breakaway.
What started as a foul then turned into a red card for the senior, leaving the Pirates one man down with nearly twenty-five minutes remaining in the second half.
Seton Hall lost momentum after this, with three yellow cards being thrown to the Pirates in just twenty minutes. A late push by defender Sam Bjork saw a header go straight to the net, but it could not find its way in as Billiken goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel came up clutch with the last second save. From there on out, Seton Hall could not stop committing fouls, leading to an overall sloppy finish to this contest against Saint Louis.
With this, Seton Hall picks up their first loss of the season, in their first ever matchup against Saint Louis. The Pirates played a slow and dull game, picking up four cards and only attempting four shots, a season low. Seton Hall will look to bounce back following the loss when they return home to play Penn on Friday, September 5th. Kickoff is set for 6:56 p.m.
