Seton Hall Draws in Road Matchup with Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates men’s soccer team (3-2-3) managed a scoreless draw on the road against the #18 ranked Princeton Tigers (5-1-2) on Tuesday.

 

Both teams came out aggressively in the first half, and Princeton almost scored within 90 seconds of kickoff, but Seton Hall controlled most of the possession after about 10 minutes. Whenever Princeton did take possession, the Pirate defense was exceptional, not giving the Tigers any space to operate deep in their own half.  

 

Each side had big chances to score at the end of the half. The Pirates had a goal waved off due to offsides in the 42nd minute, while a header in the final seconds of the half for Princeton was punched away by Pirate goalkeeper Devin Armstrong, taking the teams into the halftime locker room in a scoreless tie.  

 

The second half was the complete opposite for both teams. Princeton was fast out of the break, controlling the pace and attempting four shots in the first eight minutes of the half.  

 

The Pirates, on the other hand, had almost no presence in the Princeton half, and they didn’t attempt their first shot of the half until the 78th minute, a powerful shot on goal by Joaquín Brizuela that was saved by Tiger goalkeeper Andrew Samuels.  

 

Still scoreless, it looked like Princeton was going to be the first to break the deadlock, and they had multiple near misses down the stretch. A shot by Tyler Vilet went just outside the right goalpost, and a rocket off the foot of Benjamin Manfroy hit off the crossbar.  

 

Princeton attempted six shots in the final six minutes of the match, but thanks to some incredible saves by Armstrong and a stout defensive effort, the Pirates kept it level to finish off a 0-0 draw.  

 

It was a physical match, with both teams in double digits for fouls committed. Princeton out-shot Seton Hall 22-7, including a 15-2 margin in the second half, but the margin was only 7-6 for shots on goal. For the Pirates, it was their third scoreless draw of the year, and Armstrong’s fourth clean sheet. 

 

Seton Hall will return home on Saturday, September 26th, to face DePaul in their second BIG EAST match of the season. Liam Page and Jake Marcial will have the call on wsou.net at 6:00 p.m.
