Three new teams advanced to the next round of the FIFA World Cup after Tuesday’s matches,
all of which ended in regulation. Norway, France, and Mexico each secured victories
to move on.
Norway opened the day with a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Antonio
Nusa scored the first goal in the 39th minute for Norway, before the match stayed
quiet until the final stretch. Amad Diallo of Côte d’Ivoire tied the game in the 74th
minute, but Erling Haaland was ready to respond, scoring the game-winning goal in
the 86th minute for Norway. Norway celebrated with its signature “Viking Row,” chanting
“Ro!” after a drumbeat. Norway will face Brazil on Sunday in New Jersey.
In the mid-game match, France shut out Sweden 3-0 in New Jersey. Who else but Mbappe
scored two of the three goals for France in the 45th and 74th minutes. Mbappe is well
on his way towards the golden boot, if he can catch Messi. The second goal was scored
by Bradley Barcola. France will now take on Paraguay in the next round.
Mexico closed the night with a 2-0 win over Ecuador. Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez
scored the only two goals for Mexico. The first half was all Mexico. Ecuador, on the
other hand, had some trouble, especially in the second half, when they received the
first red card in the round of 32. Piero Hincapie received the red card in the 90
'+5 minute mark after “covering his mouth while confronting an opponent,” according
to FOX Sports. Now Mexico will wait to learn its next opponent.
