SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Coming off of a dominant win against FDU, the Seton Hall Pirates (3-1-3) kicked off Big East play with a massive victory against the Providence Friars (2-5) on Friday by a score of 2-0.

Agustin Resch got the scoring started early with a floater into the back of the net in the third minute. It ricocheted to him off a blocked shot from Axel Berglund.

From that moment on, however, the first half became a defensive battle. Seton Hall’s offense stepped aside and the Friars began to control possession. The Pirates were outshot 7-3 in the first 45 minutes. Only one of their shots were on goal while five of Providence’s shots became save opportunities.

The Pirates found themselves in many dangerous spots going into halftime. Providence put the pressure on Seton Hall’s third, but goalkeeper Matias Molina had five saves as the clock hit zero.

In the second half, the match got chippy. Per usual, conference play brought out the aggressive nature of both teams, but it prevented the Pirates from capitalizing on more opportunities.

That is until Mikkel Lejbowicz put one in the back of the net around the 53rd minute. However, the play went into review and the goal was overturned. Lejbowicz was one of the stars of the game with plenty of opportunities, although he was unable to sneak one past Carney aside from the overturned call.

The momentum then shifted back towards the Pirates. They finally got some breathing room in the 83rd minute thanks to Til Kauschke. Kauschke was fouled inside the box and awarded a penalty kick. He took the opportunity to soar the ball right past Carney to put the Pirates up 2-0 late. That was Kauschke’s fourth goal of the season.

Seton Hall’s defense was excellent as always, but it was their offensive resiliency that put them over the top.
In the Big East, any and every win matters. When the Friars were trying to poke the bear, the Pirates stayed level-headed and focused on getting the ball to their attackers. This could be a key for them to continue to play aggressively while remaining mentally tough. Paired with their surging offense, this Seton Hall team could be a force to be reckoned with.

The Pirates will look to continue their hot streak against the Princeton Tigers next Tuesday. Ryan Nelke and Jacob Nieczypor will be on the call with kickoff set for 6:56 P.M.
