HARRISON, N.J. - The New York Red Bulls (5-3-5) took down the Columbus Crew (3-3-7) 3-2 on Wednesday night, powered by a hat trick from Julian Hall.
The first few minutes of this game belonged to the visiting Crew as they controlled possession. After that, though, it wasn’t long until New York found the back of the net.
In the seventh minute, Hall beat Crew goaltender Patrick Schulte diving to his right on a nice feed across the goal area from Cade Cowell who tallied the primary assist. The secondary assist that helped the Red Bulls take a 1-0 lead came from captain Emil Forsberg.
Play between these two squads began to even out again until the 22nd minute when Columbus got on the board. Right midfielder Max Arfsten got one past Red Bulls goalie Ethan Horvath to tie the game 1-1. The goal was assisted by Hugo Picard and Andre Gomes.
As play continued in the latter part of the first half, New York and Columbus continued to trade shots on goal. In the 40th minute, Hall connected on his second goal of the night.
On a pass from Cowell, Hall’s left foot did the rest to get it past Schulte. Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty had the secondary assist. Not only was it Hall’s second goal of the night, but Cowell also tallied his second assist of the night to help New York take a 2-1 lead.
New York was able to carry that lead into halftime. Coming out of the half, head coach Michael Bradley subbed out Matthew Dos Santos for Omar Valencia. Shortly after this substitution, Valencia fouled Diego Rossi, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity.
Rossi, who came in as a substitute in the 59th minute, took full advantage of the penalty kick in the 63rd minute, finding the back of the net to tie the game 2-2. In the 68th and 77th minutes, New York and Columbus traded yellow cards.
In the 79th minute, the Red Bulls took a 3-2 lead thanks to Hall’s third goal of the night where he became the youngest player in MLS history to record a hat trick at just 18 years old.
With nine minutes of extra time at the end of the game, New York was able to hold on to the 3-2 lead for the final 18 minutes of action.
New York has now won back-to-back games and will look to make it three in a row when they host New York City FC on Saturday, May 16th at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
