HARRISON, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls (9-6-8) beat the New England Revolution (6-7-9) by a score of 5-3 on Wednesday night. The Red Bulls came into the game in eighth place and remained in that spot following the clash at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
From kickoff, New England was the stronger side. New York struggled to string together positions and lacked intensity. The Red Bull backline struggled and gave New England many chances to score. The Revolution capitalized early when Leandro Campana found the back of the net in just the 5th minute.
Things would continue to go the Revolution’s way throughout the first half. They continued to apply pressure, leading to Campana almost scoring a brace in the 25th minute. However, Campana had his goal disallowed by VAR, keeping the score at 1-0.
A poor deflection by Kyle Duncan led to the seemingly inevitable second goal for New England, and the 2-0 score remained through halftime. New York went into the break with no answers on defense, nor with the offensive set up.
Head Coach Sandro Schwarz had well received halftime talk, as New York came out firing in the second half. The relentless play paid off, as a shot by Daniel Edelman deflected off a New England defender and gave the Red Bulls life shortly after the break. The goal was the first of his young career.
The equalizer came in the 70th minute by none other than star striker Eric Choupo Moting netting his 12th goal of the season. The goal was well earned after showing great linkup play throughout the pitch.
After this, many fans expected the comeback, but no one could have predicted the treat of witnessing one of the biggest offensive outbursts in recent club history. Just minutes after the game tying goal, captain Emil Forsberg gave New York the lead on an incredible left foot strike.
But New York didn't stop there, as they added two more in a short time. Choupo Moting added another to the score sheet after a beautiful cross from Ronald Donkor. Minutes later, Forsberg added a penalty, and quickly the Red Bulls led 5-2. The incredible comeback included New York netting 4 goals in just twenty minutes.
The veteran leaders Emil Forsberg and Choupo Moting led the way once again, both scoring two goals each. Schwarz noted their importance stating that is why it is important to have players of their stature.
The Revolution fought until the end, even grabbing a consolation goal in stoppage time, but the Red Bulls came away victorious 5-3. Up next, the Red Bulls host Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Saturday at 7:30 P.M.
