HARRISON, N.J. -- The New York Red Bulls (8-3-6) defeated Atlanta United FC (4-5-8) by a score of 2-0 on Saturday night. After early scoring, New York’s defense was the key to their victory.
The Red Bulls wasted no time getting on the board, as right midfielder Cameron Harper scored off of a steal in just the third minute of play to give New York a 1-0 lead. Harper was able to force the turnover and score without the assistance of a teammate.
In a first half where the Red Bulls dominated possession of the ball, it was the early goal that set the tone. New York was able to dictate the pace of the game throughout the majority of the half, patiently moving the ball and gaining comfortability within the match.
It was a chippy night between the two teams as well, as the match saw much colliding, tripping, and the occasional yellow card.
Later in the half, it was Harper again, this time finding striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who scored to extend the Red Bulls lead in the 29th minute. New York would carry this 2-0 lead into the break, riding a confident first half performance.
The second half began quietly until Atlanta was awarded a free kick in the 57th minute. After Derrick Williams missed the shot, Atlanta scored off of the rebound. However, the goal was waved off due to Atlanta being offside.
Only minutes later, another free kick was awarded to the visitors, with Jamal Thiare missing this one as well. The Red Bulls defense prevailed as they hung onto their 2-0 lead in the 61st minute.
In the 77th minute, left back Omar Valencia was tripped on a counter attack, requiring the medical staff to check on him. The play drew one of the match’s many yellow cards, and Valencia was eventually able to exit the field under his own power. Head coach Sandro Schwarz later indicated that Valencia hurt his shoulder, but did not provide further information regarding the severity of the injury or whether his player would miss time.
Although both teams experienced multiple scoring opportunities beyond this point, neither was able to capitalize, allowing the Red Bulls to cling to their 2-0 lead and making this the final score.
On a night where New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel shined, making big saves in moments like free kicks, throw-ins, and Atlanta’s one-on-one opportunities, it was the Red Bulls defense that allowed them to gain the victory. Saturday was Coronel’s seventh shutout performance of the season.
In a successful month of May where the Red Bulls were able to string together multiple big wins, New York has received impressive performance from each area of their roster. While seeing healthy competition within the locker room, head coach Sandro Schwarz stated that he believes his team is motivating each other with their hard work and possesses a strong chemistry.
When asked about his satisfaction in the performance of his team, Schwarz said “I am proud. It is not only to be satisfied, but I am proud of the whole group. We are moving together in the same direction.”
The Red Bulls will now head into the national break with a 8-3-6 record overall and a 7-1-1 home record. New York will resume game action when they host Austin on June 14 and look to continue their recent success.
