ATHENS, G.A. -- What was supposed to be a five-game tournament turned into a four-game tournament for the Seton Hall Pirates (1-7) due to inclement weather. The Pirates traveled to Georgia for the 23rd annual Georgia Classic, which featured teams such as Virginia Tech, Georgia, Utah State. It was a winless trip for Seton Hall, as they went 0-4.
Game 1 against Virginia Tech
The Pirates opened the tournament against Virginia Tech, and neither team scored through the first inning. Seton Hall did make contact, recording two hits and drawing a walk by Caroline Hobbes to load the bases, but it did not result in a run.
In the second inning, the Pirates fell behind early, 1-0 after allowing a solo home run to right field by Jordan Lynch.
Seton Hall’s pitching struggles continued over the next three innings, and Virginia Tech extended its lead 5-0 heading into the top of the fifth.
In the fifth, the Pirates scored their first run when Caroline Hobbes grounded out, allowing Angelina Benitez to score from third and cut the deficit to 5-1.
Over the final two innings, a double by Lynch and a single by McNelly drove in two more runs for the Hokies. The Pirates battled in their final plate appearances, collecting three hits and a run from Elisabeth Fi, but it was not enough as Seton Hall fell 7-2 in the opener.
Game 2 against Georgia
In their second game it started the same way, with neither team recording a run or hit in the first inning. But in the second inning the Bulldogs took complete control. Digby singled to drive in a run and right after that, Lindemuth hit a triple that brought in two more runs.
In the third, the Pirates finally got on the board, when Angelina Benitez singled to drive in Ariana Tomli and the score was 3-1.
In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs kept making solid contact. Roose hit a double to drive in two runs and then Sullivan singled to bring in another, making it 6-1.
The Pirates could not score again, but the Bulldogs added three more runs. An infield flyout brought in one, and then Sullivan tripled to drive in two more, pushing the lead to 9-1. The game ended there due to the mercy rule.
Games 3 and 4 against Utah State
In the first game against Utah State, the Aggies got off to a quick start when Kya Pratt singled to drive in a run and give them a 1-0 lead. The score stayed this way up until the fourth inning, when Sophia Demarco singled up the middle to bring in Ariana Tomli and tie the game at 1-1.
In the fifth inning, the Aggies started to pull away, scoring seven runs. Alex Bunton homered to left field to bring in two runs, then a fielding error allowed Kya Pratt to score, and finally a grand slam from Kenzee Olsen drove in four more, making it 8-1.
In the final inning, Andrea Perez homered for the Pirates, driving in two runs to keep things competitive, but that was where the scoring ended as the Pirates fell 8-3.
The final game against Utah State started slowly, as neither team scored in the first two innings. In the third, first baseman Jazmin Ramirez homered to right center, driving in two runs to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
The fourth inning was quiet for both teams, but in the fifth, Ramirez came through again, doubling to right center to drive in Pratt to make it 3-0.
The Pirates only run came in the final inning on a fielder’s choice that drove in Martinez, cutting it to 3-1, but that was where the game ended.
The Pirates now turn their attention to their next tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, where they will face Winthrop, West Georgia, Furman, and George Mason before their home opener against Creighton on March 6.
