SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (14-5, 8-2 CONF) took down the Providence Friars (10-11, 3-7 CONF) on Tuesday night by a score of 73-57.

The Pirates are forced to play the rest of the season without their star point guard, as the team announced prior to the game that Jada Eads will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a lower body injury.

However, the disciplined team was able to pull through despite the adversity. This was the Pirates’ second victory over the Friars this season, as they earned the win in their trip to Providence back on January 8, defeating the Friars 58-48.

Unlike last matchup, the Pirates started off the game knocking down a pair of threes from Savannah Catalon and Mariana Valenzeula. It was the start of what was to come as both players were vital all game.

Although they started off hot, the Pirates eventually cooled down and ended the first period with a three and half minute scoring drought. Providence was struggling early from deep, relying on easy looks in the paint and free throw opportunities to generate their offense.

A driving layup from Audrey Shields cut the Providence deficit to one point late in the first. The Pirates ended the quarter with a pair of layups, one being off a steal, and the Pirates ended the quarter with a 15-10 lead.

Heading into the second quarter, it was the Friars this time who started the period knocking down a pair of threes, which were their first of the game. Their season-leading scorer Sabou Gueye, knocked down the second three, which gave Providence a 16-15 lead.

Jordana Codio responded with a layup to take the lead back, but a Gueye jumper and a made free throw gave Providence their last lead of the game, 19-17. Providence was able to tie it again at 23 apiece, off a fast break layup from Princess Moody.

Pirates had the lead after the first half, with a 28-26 score. The first two quarters each started with a pair of threes. The second half of this game started with a pair of layups from the Pirates to extend their lead to six, but the Friars were not ready to back down, as they were able to tie up the game again once more with six minutes to go in the third.

Fortunately, for the Pirates, they got hot quickly, hitting four threes in the quarter, moving the ball well, and getting to the line. They ended the quarter shooting 10 for 17, scoring a total of 30 points in the period.

The momentum had completely shifted towards the Pirates as they ended the quarter with a 14-point lead. The fourth quarter dragged a bit, as there were 11 fouls committed in the period.

The Friars seemed overwhelmed from the Pirates stout offensive third quarter, as Providence remained down by single digits the entire fourth quarter and remainder of the game.

Seton Hall won this game through a typical Coach Bozzella formula of moving the ball for the best shot, as well as generating offense from defense. The Pirates knocked down four more threes and had 20 points off of turnovers.

Savannah Catalon led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Mariana Valenzuela, who added 15 for the Pirates. Sabou Gueye led all Providence scorers with 15 points.

The Pirates will next host their undefeated BIG EAST foe, the UConn Huskies, on Sunday, January 25 at 12:00 P.M. where Chris Heite and Sean Casey will have the call for 89.5 FM WSOU.
