SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall Pirates took on their Big East rival, the St. John’ Red Storm, in their third conference match on Saturday afternoon, tying after full time 0-0. It was a physical defensive battle all game as neither team was able to find the back of the net.

The score did not depict how this game went, as the Pirates threatened all game with 14 shots on goal, coming up empty each time. St. John’s had seven shots on goal but had five corner kick opportunities. Red Storm goalkeeper Kayla Bower made incredible saves coming up to the ball on a lot of them that ultimately kept this game scoreless.

Gianna Angelillo had the first true opportunity for Seton Hall, attacking and putting a strong shot on goal less than a minute in. Then, Reece Paget almost scored on her own rebound minutes later.

Paget was aggressive early, and among other midfielders dominated one-on-one plays with the ball as they won a lot of tackles, as well as intercepting passes that almost led to big plays.

Shea Boyle, Kailey McCormick, and Olivia Beauvois put together a great defensive performance, appearing all over the field and making key plays on the ball. They held their ground in the back end disrupting the St. John's offense from start to finish.

Boyle even took multiple long range shots, almost hitting one that narrowly sailed above the crossbar. Another key play at the end of the first half was when Angelillo was able to split a pair of St. John's defenders, getting inside the box and creating her own shot, which traveled just wide of the top right corner of the goal.

The second half had a similar result, as both sides continued to show the same level of intensity. Brown made a sliding block midway through the half that prevented a shot.

Grace Lawler and Kylie Ray made two hustle plays where they caught up to a Marani breakaway all alone and were able to run down and destabilize a shot from even happening on both plays.

Even though the game ended scoreless, it was not nearly a testament to the fight from both teams throughout every minute of the game.

The Pirates look to bounce back and get their first win in conference play as they take on the Providence Friars next Saturday, October 4.
