SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates (7-8) beat the Brown Bears (5-8) 3-1 Sunday afternoon after holding the Bears scoreless through seven innings.

The game was marked by strong defensive innings from both sides. Mason Christopher led the effort for Seton Hall’s pitching with a six-inning stint to open the game. The sophomore notched four strikeouts and allowed just two hits.

Brown had Dylan Reid on the mound through five, where he allowed just three hits, one run, and grabbed three Ks of his own. Both pitchers were backed by impenetrable fielding efforts until the later innings.

Christopher grabbed his first two strikeouts of the day in the first inning. Brown’s batting worked the count, fouling off a number of balls before Alex Benevento got on with a single, but was left on base. Three groundouts from the Pirates offense left the inning scoreless.

Seton Hall got on the board in the bottom of the second. Ty Acker scored from third following a wild throw after Gabe Cavazzoni attempted to steal second base.

The next three innings went scoreless. Both teams put the ball in play but could not secure any base hits. Reid caught fire in the bottom of the fifth, striking out Tommy Manzo and Aiden Dill.

The momentum was short lived. Nick Tomasetto and Aidan Sengenberger singled and walked respectively. A groundout to shortstop Matt Luigs off the bat of Ryan Frontera got the Bears out of the pinch.

Seton Hall put up one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings as Brown’s defense began to falter. An error allowed Cavazzoni to get on base and advance to second before a line drive from Magnus Krieger batted him in. In the bottom of the seventh, Dill advanced to third from yet another throwing error covering the steal. A beautiful line drive off the bat of Sengenberger allowed Dill to score.

Brown refused to be shut out as Curry took the mound. In the top of the eighth, Bears loaded the bases following two hits and a batter hit by pitch. Curry plunked another batter, senior Logan Meusy, allowing Brown’s only run of the day.

Ryan Reich relieved Curry and closed the game with four strikeouts of his own.

The game came down to who slipped first out of two lockdown defenses. The Pirates posted a clean sheet on the day, while two costly errors hurt Brown. Moreover, Brown's performance from the plate did not due them any favors, as they were 4/31, while the Hall was a tad better at 7/30.

The Pirates will be back in action against the Wagner Seahawks on Tuesday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m. at SIUH Community Park.
