SAN FRANCISCO, C.A. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (2-0) defeated the San Francisco Dons (1-2) by a score of 80-66 at the War Memorial at The Sobrato Center on Friday evening where five Pirates reached double figures in scoring.

There were not too many negative aspects of Seton Hall’s first half besides the first three minutes of play, where the Pirates recorded back-to-back turnovers resulting in two points each from Candy Edokpaigbe and Paula Tirado. A tough jumper from Jordana Codio allowed the Pirates to get on board, and from that point on, the momentum was in the Pirates’ favor.

A 15-2 run closed in the first quarter, and a 9-0 run opened the second to increase the lead to 26-6. San Francisco did not score for over a quarter-worth of time until the 6:42 mark in the second when Mara Neira converted on a three-pointer to break the scoring drought. However, by then the Pirates were rolling heading into halftime with a 24-point lead, 39-15.

The second half showed a different change of events, while the Pirates were able to maintain a double-digit advantage throughout this half, they struggled in the third quarter.

The Dons came out with a different sense of urgency after the break. For one, they came out with a full court press and forced a lot of Seton Hall turnovers. They went on a 13-0 run to cut the Pirates' lead to 43-32, mostly credited to Aina Cargol.

She would score 10 of her 20 points in this quarter alone to keep her team in the game. The Dons outscored the Pirates 30-19 in this quarter, shooting an efficient 78.6 percent from the field and 71.6 percent from behind the arc.

The game was still out of reach, but it gave the Dons a huge boost heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, Seton Hall settled down and finished the game on a good note. The Dons fought hard, but the lead was too much for them to overcome. Savannah Catalon scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter to seal the 80-66 win for the Pirates.

Jada Eads led the Pirates with 16, followed by Catalon’s 15, Codio with 14, then Mariana Valenzuela and Cam Rust both with 10.

With this win, the Pirates will now turn their attention to Sunday’s game against the Pacific Tigers for the second game of two on their West coast trip. Tipoff is set for 5:00 P.M., where Joe Morales and Lauren Reese will have the call.
