PROVIDENCE, RI. – The Seton Hall Pirates (22-16), played the Providence Friars (14-21) in a three-game series this past weekend, dropping two but picking up a win in the last game.
Graduate student Kelsey Carr pitched the opening game, and freshman Naya Martinez continued her dominant first year of collegiate play. Her first-ever home run in the second inning, and an RBI single in the third, put the Pirates ahead 3-0.
The Friars rallied, as Cameron Dunn’s RBI single cut the deficit to 3-2. Emma Eichten’s third-inning, two-run homer gave the Friars a 4-3 advantage. Yet Taylor Hill’s fifth-inning RBI tied the game 4-4, and an Erin Howard RBI-single gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead. As the game headed into the seventh inning, the Pirates were holding on to their 5-4 lead with Carr on the mound, aiming to secure the win.
However, Friars’ Gabriella Sebastian scored on Brianna de la Fuente’s fly-out in game one of the doubleheaders, making it a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning. Dunn’s RBI single to center field drove in Elisa Smith, securing a 6-5 walk-off victory for Providence. Despite a team batting average of .300 or higher, pitching problems still occurred.
A mistake by the opposition gave the Friars a 1-0 lead early into game two. Kya Kreuscher’s solo home run in the third inning tied the game at 1-1. But the Friars regrouped to push ahead to a 2-1 lead when Smith’s fourth-inning RBI single drove in Hannah Aldrich.
But their lead grew to 5-2 later in the game, thanks to Lee’s double RBI triple and Peterson’s RBI single. Though Brennan homered in the sixth, the Pirates remained behind 5-2 and were unable to recover in the seventh, losing 5-2.
The Pirates’ offensive production was weak, notching only three hits and a single walk. Hoping for a series victory, the Pirates had Carr pitch the final game.
In the last game during the bottom of the third, Providence once again went out to a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Martinez stayed hot and doubled to rightfield for an RBI, with Caroline Hobbes scoring to tie it at one.
Later on, Oliva Gilbert doubled to center field for a double RBI, with Martinez and Muniz scoring to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Hannah Alexander reached on base by error, with Katey Brennan running home to push the Pirates up 4-1.
The scoring continued on; Carr scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1, while a Providence flyout allowed the opponent to score an RBI to make them within three.
In the seventh inning, Martinez singled to center field for a double RBI, allowing Hobbes and Brennan to score. Now at 7-2, Martinez stole second, and Angelina Benitez scored on a throw, making it 8-2, which ended up being the final score. Carr got the win for the Pirates, only allowing two runs off of four hits.
The Pirates will return to the field this Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Farleigh Dickinson University, right here at Mike Sheppard Senior Field.
