OMAHA, Neb. -- The Seton Hall Pirates were back on the road on Sunday afternoon where they were swept by the Creighton Blue Jays. Seton Hall played their second game of a four-game road trip against the Blue Jays, who rank thirteenth in the NCAA.
The Pirates entered DJ Sokol Arena looking to snap a seven-game losing streak, with all losses at the hands of Big East opponents. However, the Blue Jays entered the matchup on a nine-game winning streak, with a 7-0 record against the conference.
Right out the gates, the Pirates took an early lead with a kill by Asli Subasili. The Pirates and Blue Jays subsequently traded points back and forth to keep the set close the rest of the way.
The Pirates lost their late lead after a Creighton attack error tied it 18-18. Crucial errors cost the Pirates the lead and allowed Creighton to sneak by in the first set with a 25-21 score.
The second set then leaned in Creighton’s direction after the Pirates were able to stay within reach early, but gave up their only lead after 3-2. The errors piled up for both teams in the set, but the Pirates had difficulty handling Creighton’s relentless attacking from Ava Martin and Abbey Hayes. The Pirates fell by a 25-15 score in the second set.
In the third set, Creighton struck first with another kill by Martin, who led all scorers in the contest. The Pirates were able to stay within striking distance, but the set got messy after Creighton had a 9-6 lead. The Pirates committed eight errors after this point.
This gave Creighton the momentum back, but they only had a two point lead at 15-13. Creighton followed this with six kills and two aces to take the third set by a score of 25-16 to sweep the Pirates 3-0 in the contest.
Sadie Richie led all Pirates with eight kills, and Asli Subasili and Daria Safian followed with five. Despite the valiant effort, the Pirates were unable to get a win on the board and extended their losing streak to eight consecutive, as well as their conference record dropping to 0-8.
They fall to 6-13 on the season and 2-7 on the road. The Pirates’ next chance to get back in the win column will come Friday, when they travel to Indianapolis to play another conference rival in the Butler Bulldogs at 7:00 P.M.
