WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall Pirates (13-22) were swept in a doubleheader at Army West Point (19-20) by scores of 8-4 and 6-1, respectively, on Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, Army West Point used an early offensive surge to defeat Seton Hall 8–4, highlighted by a big second inning that broke the game open early.
Seton Hall came out strong, scoring twice in the first inning behind RBIs from Sophia DeMarco and Naya Martinez to take an early 2–0 lead. Army responded quickly, getting one run back in the bottom of the first before delivering the decisive blow in the second inning.
Army erupted for five runs in the second, capitalizing on defensive mistakes and patient hitting. Taylor Brown drove in runs during the rally, and Ashton White delivered the biggest hit of the game, a three-run home run to left-center that gave Army full control.
The Black Knights kept the pressure on in the third inning, adding two more runs behind another RBI hit from White to extend the lead to 8–3.
Seton Hall attempted to chip away, scoring once in the third and again in the fourth, but could not sustain momentum despite tallying ten hits on the day. Army’s pitching settled in after the early innings and shut down any chance of a comeback.
Katelyn Flanders earned the win, while Rachael Schumann took the loss for Seton Hall, who struggled to find the strike zone at times, which led to the big second inning explosion.
Army finished with 13 hits and played error-free defense, while Seton Hall was hurt by missed opportunities and key mistakes.
With the win, Army showcased its offensive depth and resilience, turning an early deficit into a convincing victory in game one.
In game two, Army West Point delivered a strong all-around performance to defeat Seton Hall 6–1, using timely hitting and solid pitching to control the game from start to finish.
Army jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning to set the tone. They added three more in the third inning, capitalizing on key hits and defensive miscues by Seton Hall, and tacked on another run in the sixth to extend their lead to six.
Seton Hall managed to get on the board in the opening inning but struggled to generate offense the rest of the way, finishing with seven hits but leaving 11 runners on base. Missed opportunities proved costly, as they were unable to convert scoring chances into runs throughout the entire game.
Pitcher Katelyn Flanders led the way for Army, throwing a complete game while allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out five. Her command and composure kept Seton Hall from building any momentum.
On the other side, Sami Wakeley took the loss for Seton Hall after giving up five runs over three innings of work. Despite some offensive contributions including a multi-hit effort from Andrea Perez, Seton Hall could not keep pace.
Army finished with eight hits and took advantage of Seton Hall’s three errors, while also staying disciplined at the plate and making the most of their opportunities.
With the win, Army improves its momentum heading into the next stretch, while Seton Hall will look to bounce back and clean up defensive mistakes after getting swept in the double header.
The Pirates will look to bounce back on the road as they head to Villanova for a three-game set beginning on Friday, April 10 at 3:00 P.M.
