INDIANAPOLIS, IND - The Seton Hall Pirates (14-25, 2-14) were swept in the three-day series against the Butler Bulldogs (19-28, 8-7), losing 8-3 on Friday, 15-6 on Saturday, and 9-2 on Sunday at Bulldog Park.

Game 1

For both the Pirates and the Bulldogs, the pitchers Grayson Bradberry and Steven Svenson started well through the first two innings. Neither team scored, but the Pirates recorded two hits: one by Ryan Frontera in the first inning and one by Nick Tomasetto in the second.

In the third inning, the Pirates got off to a great start, scoring three runs, to take a 3-0 lead. Magnus Krieger doubled to right field, driving in three runs as Frontera, Shea Grady, and Gabe Cavazzoni all scored.

The lead was cut to one in the bottom of the third as Butler responded with two runs. Aidan Thaxton scored on a throwing error, and then a fly out by Gunnar Duncan allowed David Ayers to score, making it 3-2.

That lead did not last, as things only got worse for the Pirates. In the bottom of the fourth, a two-run home run by Thaxton put the Bulldogs in front.

Butler added one run in the fifth inning, and three more in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-3. That is where the score stayed, as neither scored for the remainder of the game.

Game 2

This game started differently, as the Bulldogs got off to a strong start, while the Pirates struggled. The Bulldogs started the scoring when Galvin Gilmore doubled to right field to bring in Gunnar Duncan. Then Logan Baker doubled to left field, to drive in Gilmore, making it 2-0.

In the top of the second, the Pirates got on the board, scoring two runs. Ryan Strnad doubled to left field to bring in Frankie Scrivanic, then a ground out by Tommy Manzo brought home Strnad to tie the game at 2-2.

The tie did not last long, as Butler scored two runs on a throwing error to put the Bulldogs back on top, 4-2. The Pirates went quiet over the next three innings, failing to score while Butler added five runs, to make it 9-2.

The Pirates scored for the first time since the second inning when Scrivanic and Frontera came home, cutting the lead to 9-4. Butler scored six more runs across the sixth and seventh innings. In the ninth, the Pirates scored twice more, but with the score 15-6, there was no chance for a comeback.

Game 3

In the series finale, neither team scored in the first two innings, though the Pirates had three hits to Butler’s two. In the third, Butler scored six runs to take a 6-0 lead as Duncan, Rhoades, Schebler, Gilmore, Baker and Gavin all scored.

The Pirates scored twice in the fourth inning off Tomasetto’s triple, with both Joe Marini and Scrivanic scoring to make it 6-2.

Butler added three runs in the sixth, to extend the lead to 9-2. Neither team scored over the final three innings, and the Pirates dropped the series.

The Pirates return to South Orange on Tuesday, May 5 to host St. Peter’s in their final non-conference game. Tommy Kvaloe and Ryder Nuesell will have the call on 89.5 WSOU.
