MILWAUKEE, W.I. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (6-19, 0-14) fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles (15-9, 9-5) in straight sets on Sunday afternoon.
Seton Hall came into the match on a 13-match losing streak, still searching for their first win in BIG EAST play. They started the first set with some momentum and jumped out to an early 12-8 lead, aided by six Golden Eagles errors and prompting them to call a timeout.
Marquette cleaned up their play out of the timeout, cutting the Pirates’ lead to 14-13 after a stretch of seven consecutive kills by both teams. After a Seton Hall timeout, both teams went back and forth until Marquette took an 18-17 lead, their first since early in the set.
The Golden Eagles then won four straight points to make it 22-18 before winning three of the last five points to finish off the first set, winning 25-20 off an attack error by Seton Hall’s Daria Safian.
While the first set was close until the end, the second set was dominated by Marquette. The Golden Eagles won the first point off an attack error by Hanna Labanowska and never looked back.
With a 5-4 lead, Marquette rattled off eight consecutive points en route to a 16-5 run to take a 21-9 lead. Kills by Labanowska and Alex Rasmussen, along with three Marquette attack errors, provided the only Pirate points during that stretch.
The Pirates got two points off kills by Asli Subasili and Loukia Papadakos, but Marquette stifled any chance of a comeback with an ace from Allyson Eckel to clinch the second set 25-11.
With Seton Hall trying not to get swept for the third consecutive game, it was mostly a continuation of the second set. Marquette won the first point and once again never trailed the rest of the way.
Multiple kills by Labanowska kept the Pirates close early in the set, as Marquette jumped out to a 7-5 lead. That was as close as it would get, as the Golden Eagles would go on a 10-4 run and open up a 17-9 lead.
Seton Hall attempted a comeback, closing Marquette’s lead to 20-15, but they ran out of gas as the Golden Eagles would go on to win five of the next six points. A kill from Sienna Ifill clinched the third set, and the sweep for Marquette over the Pirates.
Riddled with injuries all season, Seton Hall only saw action from nine players in the match. Labanowska and Subasili led the team with seven kills each, while Gwen Adler had 11 assists. The Pirates committed 29 errors in total, compared to only 19 from Marquette.
With their 14th consecutive loss, Seton Hall drops to 0-14 in conference play. They return home for their final two matches of the season to try to end the year on a high note. They will be back in action at Historic Walsh Gymnasium to play the Creighton Blue Jays on Saturday, November 15 at 5:00 P.M. where Ryder Nuesell and Ryan Nelke will have the call.
