SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (6-17, 0-12) fell to the UConn Huskies (17-7, 6-6) in three straight sets on Saturday evening at Historic Walsh Gymnasium.
The Huskies came out strong, opening the first set with a 4-1 run fueled by timely
kills from Emma Werkmeister and Doga Kutlu. The Pirates battled back to keep things
competitive at 7-6, credited to Daria Safian’s back-to-back service aces.
However, UConn responded with a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 15-8, capitalizing on
the Pirates’ attacking errors and their consistent offensive pressure. Despite Seton
Hall’s effort to close the gap at 24-14 off the kill by Alex Rasmussen, UConn maintained
control and took the first set 25-14 on a kill from Hanna Tylska.
The second set saw a much stronger start from the Pirates, who jumped out to a 6-3
lead behind three early kills from Safian. After, UConn would strike back and cut
the deficit to two. The score was 6-4 off the kill from Emma Werkmeister. Seton Hall
went on another 3-0 run sparked by the timely kills by Rasmussen and Labanowska.
The Huskies would take a timeout and regroup, eventually tying the game at 13-13 off
of the kill by Tylska and attack error by Safian.
From there, both teams traded points, and the set would go back and forth all the
way up until 24-22. The attack errors and the service errors finally started getting
to the Pirates, and the Huskies would pull away to win the set 25-22.
This third and final set was all Huskies from the start, as they opened with four
straight points before Rylee Nelson put the Pirates on the board. The Huskies quickly
extended their lead with another 4-0 run taking advantage of the Pirates’ miscommunication
and attack errors to make it 8-1.
The Pirates would try to rally back off of the kill from Daria Safian, but UConn’s
offense just continued to roll, going on a 5-0 run to push the lead to 13-2. Seton
Hall managed to pick up a few points off kills from Rasmussen and a UConn error, but
the Huskies never looked back, closing out the set 25-12 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
The Pirates will now turn their attention to their next matchup on the road where they will take on the DePaul Blue Demons at McGrath Phillips Arena on Friday, November 7 at 8:00 P.M.
