SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates (6-8) dropped the first of three weekend games against the Creighton Bluejays (7-14) on Friday afternoon by a whopping score of 20-10.
A dominant offensive presence from Creighton put Seton Hall on the back foot for most of the game. The Bluejays nearly doubled the Pirates’ hit total, 21-12, with seven extra-base hits on the day, including two triples.
Lily West and Erika Perez stood out, going 5-6 and 4-5 respectively, with Perez notching 6 RBI’s. Erin Howard put up a strong performance, hitting two doubles for two RBIs in four at-bats.
Both offenses exploded to open the game. Three base hits put the Bluejays up 2-0 in the top of the first, with Keegan Mayhue and Perez recording RBI’s. Seton Hall bit back in the bottom of the inning, putting up five runs, thanks in large part to Howard and Loreale Blake.
Creighton starting pitcher Audrey Gilman was pulled in favor of Brooklyn Patchen, who ended the inning with a strikeout.
Things immediately fell apart for the Pirates in the second inning. Two more runs were scored before starter Sam Wakely was pulled in favor of sophomore pitcher Rachael Schumann.
The Bluejays bats refused to slow down. Back-to-back triples from Perez and Ashten Pierson secured three more runs as Creighton took a commanding lead off a seven-run inning. Seton Hall did not have an answer in the bottom of the inning, continuing to trail by four after the second.
Creighton scored four more runs in the top of the third. Seton Hall was forced into another pitching change, pulling Schumann for Karissa Dupuis.
The next few innings were much quieter. Only one more run was scored by the Pirates until the seventh. An RBI single from Sophia DeMarco drove in Christina Ginex. The Bluejays went scoreless for three innings straight, thanks in part to Dupuis bringing some stability to the rubber.
After narrowly missing out on a run-rule victory, the Bluejays offense caught fire once again in the final inning. The bases loaded up quickly before a walk and a wild throw drove in two runs. Perez hit yet another extra-base hit to center field, scoring Mayhue and Tara Vandewater. Avery Barnard capped off the day with a two RBI double, followed by one last base hit from West.
Seton Hall refused to go down without a fight. The Pirates capitalized on a tired Patchen and a handful of fielding errors to nab four more runs, but it was not enough to overcome the massive 14-run deficit entering the inning.
As expected, both teams struggled with volatile pitching staffs. Creighton’s explosive offense was able to compensate, but the Pirates’ bats never woke up in the middle innings. The Bluejays hit for an impressive .538 average compared to the Hall’s .353. Seton Hall was unable to take advantage of runners in scoring positions frequently throughout the afternoon.
The Pirates will look to bounce back tomorrow in game two of the series at 12:00 P.M. Jacob Nieczypor and Thomas Mazurowski will be on the call on WSOU.net.
