WASHINGTON D.C. - The Seton Hall Pirates (13-20, 3-12 CONF) came up empty handed after their three-game road trip against the Georgetown Hoyas (13-13, 6-6 CONF) ended Saturday afternoon.
Coming into this matchup, the Pirates were on a two-game winning streak, picking up a win against the Providence Friars in the final game of their three-game series and then getting a much-needed win against the Stonybrook Seawolves.
The first game on Thursday started hot for the Hoyas, picking up two runs in the first two innings from an RBI single in the first and a solo home run in the second.
Seton Hall could not keep up and ended up with just two hits and a walk in the first four innings. In the top of the sixth, the Pirates finally were able to get something going, with Loreale Blake sending Naya Martinez home on a single to cut the Georgetown lead to one.
Despite this, the Hall fell flat in the seventh inning and an all-around great outing from pitcher Karissa Dupuis simply was not enough as the Pirates fell 2-1 in the first game.
The second game started even more in favor of Georgetown than the first game, grabbing three runs before the third inning.
It was another day of Seton Hall just not being able to put together any sort of offense. In five innings, they only managed to find two hits and a walk.
With the Pirates not being able to find a groove on either side of the field, the Hoyas took advantage of this. They got a three-run home run in the fourth inning from centerfielder Devyan Johnson followed by two more runs in the sixth inning to close out the game at a final score of 8-0.
As their backs were against the wall, The Pirates needed to come up with a big win to close out the series.
To start the third game, Seton Hall gained some momentum. The first two innings remained scoreless behind some steady Pirates pitching before Angela Benitez got home by a double steal attempt at the top of the third to put the Hall ahead 1-0.
This lead however would not last long when Hoyas senior outfielder Gabby Park batted in a double to send junior middle infielder Brooke Rebhan home to tie the game at one a piece.
The game stayed tied until the fifth inning when a sac fly gave Georgetown a 2-1 lead and then two more runs were scored in the sixth inning, putting the deficit at three for Seton Hall.
With the pressure on the line, the Pirates cracked and could not convert into the seventh inning, losing 4-1 and getting swept in the series.
These were three tough losses for Seton Hall who were coming off some big wins prior to these defeats. The Pirates will attempt to bounce back during Wednesday's doubleheader when they head to West Point, New York to take on the Army Black Knights.
