SOUTH ORANGE, N.J - The Seton Hall Pirates (23-17) split their home doubleheader Wednesday afternoon vs Fairleigh Dickinson (18-17), winning 10-7 and losing 3-1.
Off their visit to Providence this past weekend, the Pirates returned home to South Orange for better results. Only taking one out of three games vs the Friars, the Pirates return to a place where they are 12-1 on this season. For Seton Hall head coach Angie Churchill, it was a chance for her to eclipse the 300 career wins mark. The Pirates would do everything they could to accomplish that achievement for their coach.
The bats were flying in game one of the midweek tilt, especially in the first inning. The Pirates immediately put five runs on the board. Hannah Alexander would start the scoring when she brought home two runs on a single up the middle.
Olivia Gilbert’s two run-double and another RBI from Taylor Hill would make it 5-1 after the first inning. An RBI single from Katey Brennan and an RBI-double from Kelsey Carr extended the Pirates lead to 7-1 in the second.
But Seton Hall would have to make a pitching change in the top of the fourth though with Karissa Dupuis struggling. With allowing six runs and ten walks, the change to Kyra Kreuscher was necessary for the Pirates.
Kreuscher would prove to be essential for the Pirates defensively as she would only allow one run and strikeout three batters in her appearance.
The Pirates continued to showcase their offensive power when Andrea Perez had a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, extending it to 9-6. A second RBI-double from Carr in the fifth was blasted to left field and made the score 10-7.
Seton Hall would take game one of the doubleheader, 10-7 off some great plays and achievements from them. One key play was Amber Johnson’s diving catch in the sixth, which led to a great double play for Seton Hall.
Carr would also become the program leader in career walks with 115 following her two walks in game one.
Heading into game two, the Pirates were expected to complete the midweek home sweep. In previous home doubleheaders vs Rider, Wagner and Army, the Pirates were able to capture both games of all three doubleheaders. That was not the case in this second game vs the Knights.
While Perez would start the scoring in the second with an RBI single, that was it offensively for the Pirates. FDU would tally three runs in the top of the third, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead the rest of the outing.
Kreuscher, who came in for relief in the first game, started the second and struggled. In addition to the three runs, she allowed six hits and only had two strikeouts.
Carr would enter the circle in the fifth inning and did her best to control the FDU hitters. She would finish with two strikeouts and allow two hits in her appearance.
However, only down two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates had their opportunities. But with bases loaded, Carr popped out, leaving Naya Martinez to be the last hope for Seton Hall. On a 3-2 count with two outs, Martinez could not be the hero and struck out swinging.
Seton Hall will get back to business this weekend as they take on the BIG EAST’s best St. John’s in a massive series. Spencer Gonzales and Lauren Reese will have the call for game one on Friday starting at 1 PM.
