SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (13-22, 2-10) took down the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (14-29, 7-16) on Wednesday afternoon, as impressive 2nd and 6th innings allowing them to secure a 10-5 win at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium.
The first inning saw starting pitcher for the Pirates John Donahue loading the bases. Donahue suffered an arm injury shortly thereafter, and had to come out of the game. Jayden Barroquiero came in to pitch for Donahue and got Seton Hall out of the top of the inning unscathed, as Lehigh was unable to score any runs.
In the bottom of the first, Gabe Cavazzoni hit a single to right field and made it to first. After a ground out by Shea Grady and a single by Ryan Frontera, Cavazzoni made it home to score Seton Hall’s first run of the game.
The top of the second was a successful 1-2-3 inning for Barroquiero, but the Pirates kept the pressure on offensively in the 2nd, as Nick Tomasetto tripled to right field and a hit from Joe Marini sent Tomasetto home.
Ryan Strnad was walked by Ralph Gariano, advancing Strnad to first and Joe Marini to second. Tommy Manzo would connect with a single that would load up the bases. This all led up to the main event, which would feature Cavazzoni driving a grand slam out of the park to put the Hall up 6-0.
In the top of the 3rd, Derek Benzinger came in to pitch for Barroquiero, earning another quick 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom half, Declan Wilkes came in to pitch for Lehigh and immediately hit Frankie Scrivanic with a pitch sending him to first, followed up by walking Nick Tomasetto. After this though, a double play by Lehigh moved the game to the next inning.
Christopher Ho came in to pitch for the Pirates, pitching another 1-2,- inning with two strikeouts. Cole Kochanowicz came in to pitch for Lehigh, creating another scoreless inning by the Pirates.
Ho continued on the bump for the Pirates, starting off the inning by hitting Parker
Ivy with a pitch, to which Ian Wirtz came in a pinch ran for him after he was taken
off the field to be looked at. Wirtz went on to steal second and third, but was called
out after an attempt to run home. In the bottom of the 5th, Frontera was walked by
Noah Gyauch-Quirk, and would wind up making it home after a sac fly from Tomasetto,
to extend the lead to seven.
Matt Pontari would be next up to pitch for the Pirates, and after an error at 3rd,
Robbie Carvelli made it to first. A triple from Aidan Quinn brang home Carvelli for
the first run of the game for Lehigh. Owen Walewander hit a pop fly that brought Quinn
home, bringing the score to 7-2. The Pirates got those runs back right away though,
adding three more runs in the 6th.
The 8th inning saw Lehigh get a couple of more runs back, with Carvelli and Quinn making it home off of pitches from Gregory Bruno. After Bruno was replaced by Stephen Curry, Walewander also scored for Lehigh making the game 10-5. However, it would not matter much as Curry would finish the game off in the 9th, securing the 10-5 win.
The Pirates now get set for a quick road trip as they head out to Indianapolis to take on Butler, with their three game series starting Friday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
