SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (18-25) entered Wednesday’s game looking to snap a two-game losing streak against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (22-25), but fell 10-0 in five innings.
Rachael Schumann got the start in the circle for the Pirates. Her outing got out of hand quickly when a Mia Mitchell two run blast and an RBI single from Makenna Coleman gave the Scarlet Knights an early 3-0 lead.
The Rutgers offense did not show any signs of letting up in the second inning. Etta Garofalo led off the inning with a solo shot to make the score 4-0.
Things would not get any easier for Schumann as she would give up three more runs and get knocked out of the game later in the second inning. The score was 7-0, heading into the third.
Offensively, the Pirates got off to a slow start. Starting pitcher, Kassandra Gewecke, seemed to have everything going right as she retired the first twelve Pirate hitters she faced.
Sami Wakeley took over for Schumann in the circle and calmed the storm. She had retired the first five hitters she faced until a single from Addie Osborne, her third hit of the game, broke up that trend.
This base hit reopened the floodgates for this Rutgers lineup. Makenna Coleman drove in two more runs with her third single of the game. She would then score on a single from Stephanie Kraska to make the score 10-0 after four.
Seton Hall needed to start scoring runs to avoid getting mercy ruled after the fifth inning. Naya Martinez broke up the perfect game with a walk to lead off the fifth inning. The Pirates’ first baserunner was immediately erased when Erin Howard grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
Gewecke struck out Lea Kosinski to close out a phenomenal five inning no hitter and end the game in a 10-0 mercy rule.
Seton Hall’s losing streak extends to three games. They will look to snap that streak on Friday, when they start a three-game road series against St. John’s.
