SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (3-6-5) lost at home to the DePaul Blue Demons (4-9-1) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Seton Hall has not defeated DePaul since 2011, however, the Blue Demons have struggled themselves this season, making the contest relatively even. Therefore, it was a great opportunity for both teams to earn their first conference win, as both entered the match 0-4-1 within Big East play.
In the first half, the Pirates looked determined and played physical early. Prior to the break, the Pirates were looking for forward Adria Kitzinger to generate offense. She was aggressive for the entire half, attempting four of Seton Hall’s five shots.
Pirates continuously utilized the right flank to work their attack and find Kitzinger for multiple strong shots. Two of the junior’s shots were on goal. Despite the valiant effort, neither team was able to get on the board in the first half.
Seton Hall returned from the break with a hot start. Freshman Jordana Bello scored her first collegiate goal with the assist coming from Grace Lawler just 45 seconds into the half to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
However, after this goal the Pirates offense started to wear out, and the DePaul defense did not allow the Pirates to dominate the flanks like they did in the first half. Suddenly, it was DePaul who turned the physicality up a notch and made several aggressive plays when the Pirates were on the attack.
The Blue Demons started to match the Pirates speed up field and contested their attacks much better in the second. In the 56th minute, DePaul finally took advantage as Danielle Fjeldsted tied the game on a quick goal.
This was when the momentum began to swing entirely towards DePaul for the remainder of the contest. This was evident after both teams split 11 shots in the first with DePaul taking six and Seton Hall taking five.
In the second however, DePaul’s defense limited the Pirates to one shot as they notched five themselves. DePaul scored their second goal in the 80th minute when Sienna Gonzales took the ball up midfield and entered the box with space to put one past Avery Strohecker, creating a 2-1 DePaul lead.
The Pirates appeared to be fatigued in the final ten minutes and were unable to tie it back up. Seton Hall falls to 3-6-5 on the season following the loss and are still seeking their first conference win of the season. The Pirates will get another conference opportunity when they travel to Indianapolis to play the Butler Bulldogs on Saturday, October 18 at 7:00 P.M.
