SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (15-6, 9-3) returns home to Historic Walsh Gymnasium to host the Creighton Bluejays (9-12, 5-7) on Sunday afternoon.
This matchup marks the 31st time that both teams faced off, with the Bluejays holding a 23-7 advantage. However, the last time the teams met in Omaha, it was the Pirates who came away with an 88-79 win.
This victory was their first against Creighton in nearly a decade. With a win in this contest, the Pirates will be looking for a season-sweep for the first time since the 2015-2016 season.
Coming into this matchup, the Pirates enter after defeating the Georgetown Hoyas 58-52 in the nation’s capital. It was the Pirates' earliest game of the season, but timing did not seem to be a problem for them.
The Pirates were down in the third quarter heading into the fourth but rallied in the last quarter to pick up the win. Mariana Valenzuela led the charge with 19 points on 3 of 6 shooting from behind the arc and was awarded player of the game honors by her coaches for the performance. Savannah Catalon finished with 17 points, 3 steals and went 9 of 10 from the charity stripe.
Looking at Creighton, after losing four of their five starters from last year’s team, this season has not been easy for them. With a brand-new roster featuring seven new players.
They are still trying to find their footing. They currently have a 9-12 record, including 5-7 in BIG EAST play, and since playing Seton Hall has gone 3-9 over their last stretch of games.
Their most recent win came in a 30-point Blowout win against the St John’s Red Storm, 81-51, in Omaha, Nebraska. Five Bluejays scored in double figures, and most importantly, they shot 44% from behind the arc and 80% from the free throw line.
The Bluejays get their scoring from all across the roster. Eight players average at least 5.3 points per game, and four players are in double figures.
Ava Zediker, who averages 13.6 points per game, leads the team in scoring. The other three players, Gesert, Townsend and Lockett also average double figures with 12.0, 11.6 and 10.0 points per game, respectively.
The last time the two teams met the Pirates were on fire from three point range, shooting 47 percent from behind the arc. This should be a point of emphasis going into this contest.
In addition, the Pirates must limit their fouls, as Creighton is the best free throw shooting team in the conference. Winning the rebounding battle and limiting turnovers should also be points of emphasis.
Shailyn Pinkney set her career high of 21 points against Creighton the first time the two played, so expect to see her involved a lot in this contest as well.
Tipoff is set for 3:00 P.M. with Jacob Glick and Jake Marcial on the call. Pregame coverage begins at 2:30 P.M. with Lauren Reese and Liam Page on 89.5 FM WSOU.
