SOUTH ORANGE, N.J - The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (2-0) looks to continue its winning streak as they face Bryant University (4-0) on Saturday, November 16th, at 4:30 p.m. in historic Walsh Gymnasium.
The Pirates have had a strong start to the 2023-2024 season, currently sitting at 2-0 with commanding wins over Wagner University (84-40) and Fordham University (67-44). The team has shown both offensive firepower and defensive grit, characteristics that will be key as they take on an undefeated Bryant team.
Seton Hall’s impressive early-season performances have been highlighted by the contributions of key players, most notably graduate transfer Faith Masonius. The former Maryland standout has seamlessly integrated into the Pirates’ system and has emerged as their leading scorer, averaging 20 points per game.
Masonius has also been a versatile asset, contributing five rebounds and five assists per game, showcasing her ability to impact the game on multiple fronts. Her leadership and experience from competing at the Big Ten level have added a new layer of depth to the Pirates' roster.
Joining Masonius in leading the offensive attack is Yaya Lops, who has also made her presence felt early in the season. Lops, averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game, provides an additional scoring threat and complements Masonius with her ability to dominate inside the paint.
Lops’ consistency has given Seton Hall a reliable inside-outside combination that opponents have struggled to counter so far. Defensively, Seton Hall has proven to be a formidable opponent, holding their first two adversaries to under 50 points each.
Against Wagner, the Pirates’ defensive intensity was evident, allowing just 40 points while forcing numerous turnovers that led to fast-break opportunities. The matchup against Fordham saw a similar display of defensive prowess, as the Pirates locked down key players and controlled the boards. Maintaining this defensive standard will be crucial as they prepare for an opponent like Bryant.
The Bulldogs head into this game with a 3-0 record, and before taking on Seton Hall, prevailed against Rider University 62-54 the night before. This quick turnaround will be a tough task for the Bulldogs, especially playing a team like Seton Hall within this back-to-back scenario.
Bryant has demonstrated resilience and depth in their early wins, positioning themselves as a formidable competitor in non-conference play. However, the physical demands of consecutive games could impact their stamina and execution, a potential advantage for the Pirates.
Seton Hall will need to keep an eye on Bryant’s offense, which has shown versatility in their scoring distribution and the ability to push the pace. While specific players have yet to break out as definitive scoring leaders for the Bulldogs, their balanced approach means the Pirates' defense must remain disciplined and vigilant.
The home-court advantage at Walsh Gymnasium, coupled with the Pirates’ strong start and the standout performances of Masonius and Lops, sets the stage for what could be another convincing performance for Seton Hall. As the season continues, head coach Tony Bozzella will be looking to maintain the team's early momentum while fine-tuning areas that need improvement.
Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m, with Jackson Shank and Patrick Corsello on the call. Fans can expect an exciting matchup that will test both teams’ early-season mettle. With Seton Hall looking to extend its perfect start to 3-0 and Bryant attempting to remain unbeaten, the stage is set for a compelling battle at Walsh Gymnasium.
