OMAHA, NE - The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (16-6, 8-3) fell short, 72-56, on the road against the Creighton Bluejays (19-4,11-1) on Wednesday night at D.J Sokol Arena. Both Kaydan Lawson and Savannah Catalon each scored 11 points apiece for the Pirates.

Creighton’s three-point shooting was the story of the game. The Bluejays, who average nearly 10 triples a game, exploded for 16 on the night, eight more than the last time they played the Hall. Seton Hall just could not find an answer for the long-range scoring, especially after Creighton hit nine treys in the first half alone.

The game started much like the first matchup between these two teams on January 11th, with Creighton’s three-point shooting setting the tone early. They hit their first 12 points from beyond the arc and quickly built a lead. Eads briefly gave Seton Hall a 10-9 advantage in the first quarter, but Creighton finished the period strong with an 8-0 run, taking a 17-10 lead into the second.

In the second quarter Seton Hall fought back in a big way; Lawson got a three-point play to cut the lead to six, then Eads followed directly after with a three-point play to cut the deficit more in the first half. Yet Creighton responded with a 7-0 run to take a 38-26 lead into the break. By halftime, they had already connected on nine three-pointers. Lauren Jensen was a big part of that, as she finished with 11 of her 21 points in just this half.

As the third quarter commenced, Seton Hall tried to stay within striking distance, but every time they gained momentum for a point, Creighton answered with another three-pointer to extinguish any chance for a comeback. Faith Masonius, who was held quietly to six points in this matchup, scored a clutch layup to bring the Pirates within seven.

However, the Bluejays regrouped with the quick timeout and responded with an 11-2 run, extending their lead to 16 and ultimately sealing the game. In the final quarter, the Pirates outscored the Bluejays, but it was not enough. Jayme Horan was key for Creighton in the later run, scoring eight of her 17 points in this quarter, simultaneously going two of two rom the three-point line.

Despite the tough loss, there were bright spots for Seton Hall. Lawson had a strong performance, setting a season-high with 11 points and adding five rebounds and two assists. Catalon also contributed 11 points and three steals.

Ramani Parker made her return to the court, simultaneously in her Seton Hall debut, after missing the first 21 games this season. She finished with four points and showed plenty of energy. Unfortunately, freshman Jada Eads' impressive streak of 15 consecutive double-digit scoring games came to an end, as she finished with eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.

This might not have been the Pirates' best game of the season, but they have a lot they should be proud of. They won the turnover battle 13 to seven, and had more second-chance points (13 to five). Defensively they kept the reigning BIG EAST player of the week, Molly Mogensen, scoreless. Seton Hall must go back and review what went wrong in this game to prepare for their next one.

The Pirates now turn their attention to Saturday’s game at the historic Walsh Gymnasium when they take on Xavier this Saturday at 2 p.m.
